Ebook "Green biomass pretreatment for biofuels production" emphasises the tactical mobile and on-farm scales applications that use green pretreatments and processing technologies without the need of on-site waste treatment. Because of the varieties of different biomasses, no single pretreatment is expected to be the universal choice. Some of the pretreatment methods present niche applications are also discussed.

Fermentation quality of herbal tea residue and its application in fattening cattle under heat stress
Herbal tea residue (HTR) is generally considered to be the waste of herbal tea beverage production while it still retains rich nutrients and active substances. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of fermentation technology on improving the quality of HTRs, and focus on the fermented HTR-induced alleviation of summer heat stress in fattening cattle.

This review paper summarizes the best method for the utilization of agricultural wastes as raw material for the production of bioethanol. Agricultural wastes are rich in sugar and complex carbohydrates that makes it suitable source to carry out the fermentation process. Bioethanol is widely used in industries such as, chemical, pharmaceutical and food for various purposes especially as sterilizer.

Pectinases find wide application in different industrial applications, e.g., textile, food, tea, paper and pulp, vegetable oil extractions, saccharification of agricultural remains, and in fermented drinks. Three fungal strains were screened for pectinase production. Results indicated that all strains are capable of producing a pectinase enzyme.

The wine-making industries produce millions of tons of residues (grape pomace) after fermentation, which represents a waste management issue both ecologically and economically. After juice extraction from grape fruit, grapes pomace collectively includes stems, seeds and skins that is discarded as waste accounted for 55 – 65 per cent of the fruit. The most important variety grown in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu state is Muscat Hamburg (local name is Panner grapes), hence this variety of grapes is used in the study.

Phragmites australis, common pond reed with high lignocelluloses content is suitable for bioethanol production. In the present study pretreated pond reed was first fermented to sugars using cellulose and xylan degrading microorganisms isolated from cow dung and organic kitchen waste. Further fermentation of sugars to ethanol was performed using combinations of Sachharomyces cerevisae, Trichoderma reesei and Pichia stipitis.

Oil rich effluents are always a menance for many industries in the process of effluent treatment. The process usually requires more complex methods to resolve the issue to reach to disposable effluent standards. Enzymatic degradation was proved to be promising for the efficient treatment of oil rich effluents. Among the hydrolytic enzymes, lipases are the second most widely-used enzymes in industrial applications. A potential lipolytic fungus obtained from a marine soil sample exposed to oil spillage was identified as Aspergillus japonicus MF-1.

The Urban Environment is important for all of us, not least because so many of us live in cities. Cleaner city, healthy life and a better environment are important demands for city dwellers. Due to increase in urbanization rate, population density and per capita production of solid waste is also increasing. According to MSW Rules, 2000, every municipal authority is responsible for setting up a waste processing and disposal facility. Approximately 50 million metric tonnes (115,000 metric tonnes per day) of solid waste is generated every year by the urban population in India.

Amylase with maximum activity at alkaline pH prefers most industrial applications. The present study investigate amylase production and optimization by bacterial strain isolated and identified from rice mill waste dumped soil. The potent isolate KR9 was identified based on biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA gene analysis confirmed that this isolate belonged to the genus Bacillus and it was most closely related to B. cereus (99 % similarity). The selected isolate B. cereus KR9 was optimized for pH, growth period and carbon and nitrogen sources.
