Ebook "Honeybee neurobiology and behavior: A tribute to Randolf Menzel" is a sequel of a similar book, edited by Randolf Menzel and Alison Mercer, “Neurobiology and Behavior of Honeybees”, published in 1987. It is a “Festschrift” for the 70th birthday of Randolf Menzel, who devoted his life to the topic of the book. The book will include an open commentary for each section written by Randolf Menzel, and discussed with the authors.

Honey bee colonies managed for agricultural pollination are highly dependent on human inputs, especially for disease control and supplemental nutrition. Hives are routinely fed artificial “pollen substitute” diets to compensate for insufficient nutritional forage in the environment.

The behavioural transition from nurses to foragers in honey bees is known to be affected by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including colony demography, hormone levels, brain chemistry and structure, and gene expression in the brain. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this behavioural transition of honey bees is still obscure.

The Asiatic honey bee, Apis cerana indica harvests pollen and nectar from the flowers and helps in pollination process. Bee pasturage in the location is essential for better management of the hives and improving the yield. Floral diversity in the Madurai region was studied which revealed that the flora was belonging to 76 families. Among them family Fabaceae contributed a maximum of 31 species (12.25%) followed by Asteraceae 6.72% with 17 flora, Caesalpiniaceae (5.53%) and Cucurbitaceae (4.74%).

Forager bees communicate their floral findings in order to recruit other worker bees of the hive to forage in the same area. The factors that determine recruiting success are including evaluations of the quality of nectar and/or pollen brought in. The waggle dance and odor plume are the two hypotheses for explaining “foragers recruit other workers bees in hive”. The dance theory is far more widely accepted, and has far more empirical support than the odor theory.

Beekeeping industry, is one of the important agricultural and forest based rural industries in India, which mainly involves in large scale production of honey and related products, besides they play a vital role in pollination of various crops. Beekeeping is entirely dependent on the types of flowering plants available in any given area. It is not only the total abundance, that is important, but also the duration of time for which bee forage is available.

Foraging behavior of bumble bees and honey bees with respect to foraging activity, foraging rate, foraging speed, loose pollen grains and abundance were studied by utilization of bumble bees (B. haemorrhoidalis) and European honey bees for the pollination of kiwifruit cv. Allison under caged condition at kiwifruit orchard of Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) during 2017.

Survey was undertaken to assess honey production system, identify major beekeeping constraints and determine the association of potential risk factors with occurrence of honeybee diseases, predators and pests at Ganderbal district of Kashmir during summer 2018. Questionnaire survey and laboratory diagnostic methods were employed. A total of 50 beekeepers were included in the questionnaire survey and were interviewed through questionnaire survey, 64.5% had knowledge about honey bee diseases and pests.

This paper presents a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm which is based on the intelligent foraging behavior of honey bee swarm and called artificial bee colony (ABC). This algorithm is applied to find out optimal placement and sizing of Solar Photovoltaics Distributed Generation (PVDG) units under considering multiple objective functions in a distribution system.

This paper is an extensive survey of the Bee Colony Optimization (BCO) algorithm, proposed for the first time in 2001. BCO and its numerous variants belong to a class of nature-inspired meta–heuristic methods, based on the foraging habits of honeybees. Our main goal is to promote it among the wide operations research community.

Now in seven languages worldwide, To Bee or Not to Bee is the story -- clever and spiritually sophisticated -- of a worker bee who, with the help of a newfound friend, finds fulfillment amidst the mindless tedium and chaos of life in a honeybee colony. Imagine yourself in that stifling existence -- build the hive, forage, feed the larvae, store

Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are the main pollinating agents for numerous plants and fruit trees and, hence, play a key role in agriculture and more generally in the maintenance of ecological biodiversity. Although these social insects are not the targets of all the different agrochemical treatments used in crop protection, they are widely affected by pesticides.
