This study aims to investigate the current FDI inflows in Vietnam and the impacts of the China-US trade dispute to the Vietnam economy as well as its FDI flows. Moreover, the paper also discusses why and how multinational companies choose Vietnam for their investing destinations by making use ownership-location-internalisation paradigm which is developed by Dunning.

This study developed the framework of knowledge spillovers at sector level and investigated these spillover effects of research and development (R&D), foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade activities on sectoral innovation by Spatial Regression Models. Besides, a positive relation between the FDI intensity (in terms of the size of FDI in relative to the total capital resource) and the growth of employment in the domestic enterprise sector is found which implies that the relatively larger presence of FDI enterprises can have positive spillover effects on the domestic enterprise sector’s employment growth. However, the spillover effects of FDI are considered limited.

This study is conducted to answer the question of whether the presence of FDI enterprises affects the survival of domestic firms or not. The authors apply the logistic regression model to analyze this crowding out effect, using the case of the textile and garment processing industry, which has a key role in Vietnamese manufacturing, industry and which also has attracted a large amount of FDI in recent years.
