This work investigates the generation of neutron flux inside lead shielding due to cosmic rays as a function of shielding thickness by use of the GEANT Monte-Carlo modelling code. GEANT allows for the Monte-Carlo modelling of the transport of particles in matter. This includes muons, the particles of interest here, which originate from cosmic ray showers.

The fatigue failure around rail-end-bolt holes is particularly dangerous since it leads to derailment of trains and consequently to inevitable accidents. It is well-known that the fatigue life of structural holed components, subjected to cyclic load, can be increased by generating compressive hoop stresses around the holes.

Hybridization of species with porous genomes can eventually lead to introgression via repeated backcrossing. The potential for introgression between species is reflected by the extent of segregation distortion in later generation hybrids.

This study mainly focuses on the structural design optimization of the 4th-generation reactor coolant pump, including analysis of external characteristics, inner flow, and transient characteristic. It was found that: the reactor coolant pump with a central symmetrical dual-outlet volute structure has better radialdirection balance, the pump without guide vane has better hydraulic performance, and the pump with guide vanes has worse torsional vibration and pressure pulsation.

Wind power plants can be realized with different generator types using different control principles. The choice of the generator regardless of control method, potentially destabilizes the grid, and can even lead to grid collapse. For independent grid (e.g. on islands) this risk is especially great. The report aimed at giving the reader a general overview of the control methods, and the developers a better understanding of each generator type to get the right choice for their wind power project.

The uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are thought to uncouple oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria and thus generate heat. One of the UCP isoforms, UCP3, is abun-dantly expressed in skeletal muscle, the major thermogenic tissue in humans. UCP3 has been overexpressed at high levels inyeast systems, where it leads to theuncouplingof cell respiration, suggesting that UCP3may indeed be capable of dissipating the mitochondrial proton gradient.

Homocysteine (Hcy) is anonprotein-forming sulphur amino acid that plays an important role in remethylation and trans-sulphuration processes. In recent years, it has been suggested that increased levels of plasma Hcy may play a role in the pathogenesis of various diseases, particularly at the cardiovascular level. The pathogenic mechanism of hyperhomocysteinemia, however, has not been clarified.

Cytosolic phospholipase A2 -a (cPLA2 -a) is a calcium-activated enzyme involved in agonist-induced arachidonic acid release. In endothelial cells, free arachidonic acid is predominantly converted into prostacyclin, a potent vaso-dilator and inhibitor of platelet activation. As the rate-lim-iting step in prostacyclin production is the generation of free arachidonic acid by cPLA2-a, this enzyme has become an attractive pharmacological target and the focus of many studies.

Increases in intracellular [Ca 2+ ] occur synchronously between cells in the neuroepithelium. If neuroepithelial cells were capable of generating action potentials synchronized by gap junctions (direct current electrical coupling), the influx of Ca 2+ through voltage-activated Ca 2+ channels would lead to a synchronous increase in intracellular [Ca 2+ ].

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among women with gynecologic malignancies in the United States. Advanced ovarian cancers are difficult to cure with the current available chemotherapy, which has many associated systemic side effects. Doxorubicin is one such chemotherapeutic agent that can cause cardiotoxicity. Novel methods of delivering chemotherapy without significant side effects are therefore of critical need.

There is an urgent need to develop new innovative therapies for the control of advanced cancer. The combination of antigen-specific immunotherapy with the employment of immunomodulatory agents has emerged as a potentially plausible approach for the control of advanced cancer. Methods: In the current study, we explored the combination of the DNA vaccine encoding calreticulin (CRT) linked to human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) E7 antigen (CRT/E7) with the TLR7 agonist imiquimod for their ability to generate E7-specific immune responses and antitumor effects in tumor-bearing mice.

The central mechanism of DIC is the uncontrolled generation of thrombin by exposure of the blood to pathologic levels of tissue factor (Fig. 110-3). Simultaneous suppression of physiologic anticoagulant mechanisms and abnormal fibrinolysis further accelerate the process. Together these abnormalities contribute to systemic fibrin deposition in small and mid-sized vessels. The duration and intensity of the fibrin deposition can compromise the blood supply of many organs, especially the lung, kidney, liver, and brain, with consequent organ failure.

Inherited mitochondrial disorders are transmitted in a matrilineal fashion; all children from an affected mother will inherit the disease, but it will not be transmitted from an affected father to his children (Fig. 62-11D ). Alterations in the mtDNA affecting enzymes required for oxidative phosphorylation lead to reduction of ATP supply, generation of free radicals, and induction of apoptosis. Several syndromic disorders arising from mutations in the mitochondrial genome are known in humans and they affect both protein-coding and tRNA genes (Table 62-1 and Table 62-5).

For the system to be acceptable to the end-users, the database design activity is crucial. • A poorly designed database will generate error that may lead to bad decisions being made, which may have serious repercussions for the organization. On the other hand, a well-designed database produces, in an efficient way, a system that provides the correct information for the decision-making process to succeed.

When Microsoft created .NET, it wasn’t just dreaming about the future—it was also worrying about the headaches and limitations of the current generation of web development technologies. Before you get started with ASP.NET 2.0, it helps to take a step back and consider these problems. You’ll then understand the solution that .NET offers. In this chapter you’ll consider the history of web development leading up to ASP.NET, take a whirlwind tour of the most significant features of .NET, and preview the core changes in ASP.NET 2.0. If you’re new to ASP.
