  • On the basis of currently observed patterns of mortality by educational level, the number of deaths that can be attributed to health inequalities in the European Union (EU-25) as a whole is estimated to be 707 thousand per year (all figures apply to 2004). The number of life years lost due to these deaths is about 11.4 million. • The second domain, environmental pollutants, encompasses exposures that might bring about chronic conditions or exacerbate these conditions. We include in this domain air, water, and other toxic pollutants. For example, repeated exposure to toxic waste sites may result in malignancies later in life (American Cancer Society, 2002), which in turn may lead to functional decline (Teno et al., 2001; Michael et al., 2000). Thus, exposure to water contamination or toxic wastes is likely to affect health status, particularly though cumulated effects in the lifecourse.

  • A breakdown by diagnosis shows even greater inequities: for women only 21% of the assessed musculoskeletal disorders’ claims were approved compared to 38% for men. For mental illness, only 12% of the women’s claims were accepted against 35% for the men’s. Data from Quebec, Canada, show similar inequities for stress-related claims and those for musculoskeletal disorders (Lippel, 1999, 2003); however an examination of claims related to workplace violence showed an advantage for women (Lippel, 2001).

  • This book is partly based on lectures I gave at NUI Galway and Trinity College Dublin between 1998 and 2000. It is by no means a comprehensive guide to all the mathematics an engineer might encounter during the course of his or her degree. The aim is more to highlight and explain some areas commonly found difficult, such as calculus, and to ease the transition from school level to university level mathematics, where sometimes the subject matter is similar, but the emphasis is usually different.
