Ebook "Dielectric properties of ionic liquids" discusses the mechanisms of electric conductivity in various ionic liquid systems (protic, aprotic as well as polymerized ionic liquids). It hence covers the electric properties of ionic liquids and their macromolecular counterpanes, some of the most promising materials for the development of safe electrolytes in modern electrochemical energy devices such as batteries, super-capacitors, fuel cells and dye-sensitized solar cells.

Ebook "From single molecules to nanoscopically structured materials" principle relied on the defined functionalization of macromolecules and macromolecular assemblies. The basic idea was to chemically encode the building blocks, permitting better control of structure formation. The placement of ionic or hydrogen-bonding groups into well-defined positions, the definition of amphiphilic “patches” and the creation of directed as well as non-directed interactions have led to novel aggregate topologies in solution as well as on surfaces.

Ebook "Principles of polymer design and synthesis" aimed at the advanced undergraduate or graduate student, provides future scientists and engineers with the fundamental knowledge of polymer design and synthesis to achieve specific properties required in everyday applications. In the first five chapters, this book discusses the properties and characterization of polymers, since designing a polymer initially requires us to understand the effects of chemical structure on physical and chemical characteristics.

Imidazolium-based ionic liquids are important solvents for the processing of natural cellulose. Little is known about their use in synthesizing cellulose via bottom-up polymerization of β-1,4-D-glucosyl chains in solution. Here, we analyzed cellodextrin phosphorylase-catalyzed synthesis of cello-oligosaccharides, and the subsequent spontaneous self-assembly of the chains, in the presence of cellulose-dissolving ionic liquid, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium dimethyl phosphate ([Dmim]DMP) or 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim]OAc).

Synthesis of the ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-(4-methyl-7,8-dihydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one) benzimidazolium chloride followed by the conversion of ammonium salts on the imidazole ring hooked to the coumarin group was modified by postmodification of the silica matrix where 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane was used as not only a surface modification agent, but also as an ATRP halogen source. The synergetic effect of charged ammonium groups as well as hydroxyl groups present on the coumarin was investigated in terms of ATRP polymerization.

Two types of polymer-grafted silica based on polyvinylimidazole Brønsted acidic ionic liquids were prepared and used as new heterogeneous catalysts for the preparation of pharmaceutically important quinoxaline derivatives. These catalysts were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and titration. They could be recycled without considerable loss in their catalytic activity. High efficiency of the catalysts along with short reaction times, high yields, easy purification, recyclability, and simple procedure are among the advantages of these catalytic systems.

In many places around the world, the fluoride concentration in ground water as raw water is higher than the threshold standard for healthy drinking water. The aim of this work is to study the characteristics of an anionic membrane that will be the subject of an application for defluoridation by electrodialysis. The first objective of this work is to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of the membrane used in experiments by determination of the exchange capacity, water uptake, ionic conductivity, and transport number (Hittorf method).

Nitric oxide is one of the most important biochemical parameters in biological processes; it is also known as carcinogenic. There is need for the design of stable and durable solid phase nitric oxide sensors. In this study, we immobilized the nitric oxide sensitive molecules pyrene, tris(2,2’-bipyrdyl)dichlororuthenium(II) hexahydrate (Ru(bipy) 2+ 3 ), and magnesium phthalocyanine (Mg-Pc) for the first time in polymeric or glassy matrices. We applied silver nanoparticles and ionic liquids in the fabrication process of polymeric electrospun fibers and thin films.

A solid acid membranes based on poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), sodium bromide (NaBr) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) were prepared by a solution casting method. The morphological, IR, electrical and optical properties of the (PVA)0.7(NaBr)0.3(H3PO4)xM solid acid membranes where x = 0.00, 0.85, 1.7, 3.4, 5.1 M were investigated. The variation of film morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. FTIR spectroscopy has been used to characterize the structure of polymer and confirms the complexation of phosphoric acid with host polymeric matrix.

Tropomyosin is a284 residuedimeric coiled-coil protein that interacts in a head-to-tail manner to form linear filaments at low ionic strengths. Polymerization is related to tropomyo-sin’s ability to bind actin, and both properties depend on intact N- and C-termini as well as a-amino acetylation of theN-terminus of the muscle protein. Na-acetylation can be mimicked by an N-terminal Ala-Ser fusion in recombinant tropomyosin (ASTm) produced inEscherichia coli.

The annual production of various polymers can be measured only in billion tons of which polyolefins alone figure around 100 million tons per year. In addition to radical and ionic polymerization, a large part of this huge amount is manufactured by coordination polymerization technology. The most important Ziegler-Natta, chromium- and metallocene-based catalysts, however, contain early transition metals which are too oxophilic to be used in aqueous media.
