  • Ratooning in sugarcane is a common practice in sugarcane as it saves cost of planting material and preparatory tillage and also germinates faster than the seed material. Several chemicals have been used in enhancing the production and productivity. In this regard, the effectiveness of Cytozyme Products over yield and juice quality in sugarcane ratoon crop was assessed. Two ratoon crops were initiated in both the seasons, i.e., autumn and spring using an early ripening and high sugar variety, CoPk 05191, in different fields.

  • Sugarcane juice is commonly used as a delicious drink in both urban and rural areas. Sugarcane juice is spoiled quickly due to the presence of simple sugars. Preservation of sugarcane juice was examined to reduce the spoilage and to increase the shelf life by membrane processing. A study was carried out to preserve sugarcane juice by membrane processing and compared with the untreated juice.

  • Ninety-three early generation sugarcane clones were evaluated for different morphological and juice quality characters among early generation sugarcane clones. Highest genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV) were recorded for Number of millable cane (NMC) and single cane weight respectively. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of means was observed for germination percent, NMC/hectare, cane height and inter node length. It indicated that direct selection of those traits would be effective.

  • The experiment was conducted to study the effect of salinity levels (ECe value 0, 2.5 and 5.0 dSm-1 ) on sugarcane genotypes (CoP 9702, CoP 112, BO 154, BO 153 and CoP 9301) under NaCl induced salt stress condition in glasshouse at Sugarcane Research Institute, Pusa, Bihar. The increasing salinity levels from 0 to 5 dSm-1 ECe significantly decreased germination, plant height and plant population indicating stunting of growth under salt stress condition.

  • Red rot disease of sugarcane is caused by Colletotrichum falcatum Went, a disease of major importance in the most of sugarcane growing state of India. Red rot caused a wide range of reduction in juice quality and also it is responsible for degeneration of varieties in sugarcane. The present investigation was under taken at SRI, Pusa, to assess the deterioration in cane juice quality induced by red rot pathogen. The observation clearly revealed that there was an appreciable reduction in the juice quality i.e. Pol, Brix and Purity.

  • Sugarcane juice was analysed for the two different treatments such as ohmic heating and conventional heating. The study analysis showed that the total plate count decreased with severity of ohmic heating treatment which reduced from 6.3 to 3.47 log cfu/ml for 90 C and 15 min treatment. So observing the PPO inactivation, colour change and microbial reduction of the treated samples into consideration, ohmic heating of sugarcane juice at 70C for 3 min holding time was found to be optimum.
