β-galactosidase enzyme is commercially important and is generally used in dairy industries for the improvement of lactose intolerance. In this study, different strains of isolated lactic acid bacteria were evaluated for their βgalactosidase productivity, but Lactobacillus casei MB2resulted with the highest production.

Peanuts (Arachis hypogaea) are good food for infants suffering from various forms of malnutrition and for individual with lactose intolerance allergies. Peanut milk does not contain any lactose and is therefore suitable for people with lactose intolerance. In this study, peanut milk was prepared by three different methods namely, by normal soaking, soaking in 1% NaHCO3 and roasting.

Hydrogen breath tests are noninvasive procedures frequently applied in the diagnostic workup of functional gastrointestinal disorders. Here, we review hydrogen breath test results and the occurrence of lactose, fructose and sorbitol malabsorption in pediatric patients; and determine the significance of the findings and the outcome of patients with carbohydrate malabsorption.

Nineteen thermophilic bacterial isolates were screened and only two (PW10 and PS7) produced extracellular, auto inducible β-galactosidase. PW10 and PS7 was Gram’s positive, rod shaped and exhibit growth between 50-80 °C and pH 5-9. Optimum βgalactosidase activity of 32083.33 U/mg/min was observed at 60 °C and pH 7 for PS7, while 2666.66 U/mg/min at 60 °C and pH 9 for PW10. 16S rDNA sequencing of PW10 showed 99% similarity with Anoxybacillus flavithermus and PS7 with Bacillus licheniformis (GenBank accession no. KF039883 and KF039882).

Over the last few decades the prevalence of studies about probiotics strains has dramatically grown in most regions of the world. Probiotics are specific strains of microorganisms, which when served to human or animals in proper amount, have a beneficial effect, improving health or reducing risk of getting sick and the probiotics are used in production of functional foods and pharmaceutical products.

Probiotics may exert a multidirectional effects affecting the gene expression in intestinal cells. A number of positive effects of probiotics have been indicated, particularly their beneficial effect in the pathologic conditions including antibiotic-associated traveler's diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), lactose intolerance, dental caries, gastroduodenal ulcers due to Helicobacter pylori, hepatic encephalopathy, intestinal motility disorders and neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis.
