Industry 4.0 which started off as Germany’s brainchild is expected to minimize the labor cost advantages of traditional low-cost locations, making it attractive for manufacturers to bring previously offshored jobs back home. The revolution will require more ‘talented’ workers who can adapt to technology rather than traditional ‘skilled’ workers. Manual workers will face many disadvantages.

The large-scale rural farms producing on a commercial basis in Pakistan are among the lowest cost farms in the world, driven by low cost of labor and feed. This has been reported in IFCN9 2004. While still limited in number, the big commercial farms of Pakistan have major economic benefits. Existing commercial farms need to boost their current level of mechanization, automation and refrigeration (cold chains), in order to be more productive.

Home-based businesses are on the rise, especially while the stubborn economic recession continues to hold our economy in its grips. More and more individuals who are unable to land positions are turning to opening their own home-based businesses. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the number of home-based businesses currently operating at 18.3 million. Other organizations say the number is closer to 38 million. The pros seem to outnumber the cons. The low start-up costs are of particular interest to the many unemployed.

Global competition has caused the US textile industry to modernize and become cost competitive because developing nations have discovered that exporting textile products to the USA is an attractive way to enhance their economic growth. Their low labor costs have pressured domestic producers into replacing labor intensive manufacturing equipment with automated, sophisticated, efficient, hightechnology machinery. In furniture manufacturing, typically 40% of the total manufacturing cost is the labor cost (Whelan and Maklari 2002). This was the main reason why furniture manufacturers moved from New England to Michigan, and then to Indiana, North Carolina, and Mississippi (Raymond 2004). To reduce manufacturing labor costs companies are now moving to places like China to take advantage of the low labor costs. It is reported that the wages in China are about 16 times lower compared to U.S. wages (ILO 2006). In addition, the Chinese to U.S. currency exchange rate...

Our new insight is on the interaction between relative labor turnover dynamics and lack of insurers’ premium flexibility. A related possibility is that high labor turnover may be preferred by some employers, especially small firms that employ homogenous workers with low job-specific human capital. Workers tolerant of high turnover tend to be younger and healthier. By not offering health insurance, despite the tax advantage, these firms deter older and less healthy workers.
