This research project aimed to: (a) determine the demographic profile and common conditions of patients in a Teaching Clinic; (b) describe the adverse events from Chinese medicine treatment; (c) examine the overall treatment outcomes and treatment interventions of Chinese medicine in patients with respiratory disorders; and (d) assess the level of knowledge and compliance with Chinese medicine in patients with respiratory disorders.

AnEscherichia coli cell-free transcription⁄translation system was used to explore the high-level incorporation of l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) into proteins by replacing tyrosine with DOPA in the reaction mixtures. ESI-MS showed specific incorporation of DOPA in place of tyro-sine. More than 90% DOPA incorporation at each tyrosine site was achieved, allowing the recording of clean 15 N-HSQC NMR spectra.

The structural properties of EspB, a virulence factor of theEscherichia coli O157 type III secretion system, were characterized. Far-UV and near-UV CD spectra, recorded between pH 1.0 and pH 7.0, show that the protein assumesa-helical structures and that some tyrosine tertiary contacts may exist. All tyrosine side-chains are exposed to water, as determined by acryl-amide fluorescence quenching spectroscopy.

We monitored a continuous culture of the yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiae by membrane-inlet mass spectrometry. This technique allows very rapid simultaneous measurements (one point every 12 s) of several dissolved gases. During our experiment, the culture exhibited a multioscillatory mode in which the dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide records displayed period-icities of 13 h, 36 min and 4 min.
