In foreign language syndrome, patients switch from their native language and fixate for a period of time on a second language. There have been few reported cases. The language switch typically occurs postoperatively and spontaneously resolves after a short period of time.

Dravet syndrome is a severe epilepsy disorder characterized by drug-resistant seizures and cognitive dysfunction, often caused by SCN1A gene mutations. It leads to neurodevelopmental delays and motor, behavioral, and cognitive impairments, with a high mortality rate.

Financial impacts associated with a switch to a different electronic health record (EHR) have been documented. Less attention has been focused on the patient response to an EHR switch. The Mayo Clinic was involved in an EHR switch that occurred at 6 different locations and with 4 different “go-live” dates. We sought to understand the relationship between patient satisfaction and the transition to a new EHR.

To assess the frequency, fidelity, and impact of replication studies in the clinical decision support system (CDSS) literature. There is an urgent need to better characterize which core CDSS principles require replication, identify past replication data, and conduct missing replication studies.

Low adherence to bisphosphonate therapy is associated with increased fracture risk. Factors associated with discontinuation of osteoporosis medications have not been studied in-depth. This study assessed medication discontinuation and switching patterns among Medicare beneficiaries who were new users of bisphosphonates and evaluated factors possibly associated with discontinuation.

Treatment failure and delay in switching to second line regimen are major concerns in the treatment of HIV infected children in a resource limited setting. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of first line antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen failure, reasons and time taken to switch to second line antiretroviral (ARV) medications after treatment failure among HIV-infected children.

The Tat system catalyzes the transport of folded globular proteins across the bacterial plasma membrane and the chloroplast thylakoid. It recognizes cleavable signal peptides containingacritical twin-argininemotif but little isknownof the overall structure of these peptides. In this report, we have analyzed the secondary structure of the SufI signal peptide, together with those of two nonfunctional variants in which the region around the twin-arginine, RRQFI, is replaced by KKQFI or RRQAA.

Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (PDK4) is a key regulatory enzyme involved in switching the energy source from glucose to fatty acids in response to physiological conditions. Transcription of the PDK4gene is activated by fasting or by the administration of a PPARaligand in a tis-sue-specific manner.

In plants, regulation of transgene expression is typically accomplished through the use of inducible promoter systems. The ecdysone receptor (EcR) gene switch is one of the best inducible systems available to regulate transgene expression in plants.

Regulated gene expression may substantially enhance gene therapy. Corre-lated with structural differences between insect ecdysteroids and mamma-lian steroids, the ecdysteroids appear to have a benign pharmacology without adversely interfering with mammalian signaling systems. Conse-quently, the ecdysone receptor-based gene switches are attractive for appli-cation in medicine.

A set of thirty-two natural and ten semisynthetic ecdysteroids was assayed in murine 3T3 cells across ten different ecdysteroid receptor (EcR) ligand-binding domains derived from nine arthropod species in an engineered gene switch format. Among the ecdysteroids tested, the most biologically wide-spread ecdysteroid, 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), was moderately and consis-tently potent across the tested EcRs.

Src-family kinases (SFKs) play a pivotal role in growth factor signaling, mitosis, cell motility and invasiveness. In their basal state, SFKs maintain a closed autoinhibited conformation, where the Src homology 2 domain inter-acts with an inhibitory phosphotyrosine in the C-terminus.

Biological signaling networks can exhibit rich response dynamics including ultrasensitivity, adaptation to persistent stimuli and oscillations. Previous modeling efforts have considered the proteins in these networks as two-state entities and their total levels as fixed quantities.

Time-dependent regulation analysis is a new methodology that allows us to unravel, both quantitatively and dynamically, how and when functional changes in the cell are brought about by the interplay of gene expression and metabolism. In this first experimental implementation, we dissect the initial and late response of baker’s yeast upon a switch from glucose-lim-ited growth to nitrogen starvation.

In addition, if one medication does not work, people should be open to trying another. Research funded by NIMH has shown that those who did not get well ater taking a irst medication oten fared better ater they switched to a diferent medication or added another medication to their existing one. 25,26 For the latest information on medications used to treat depression, see the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site at http://www.fda.gov.

For at least five decades this unique non-suppurative sequel to group A streptococcal infections has been a concern of the World Health Organization and its member countries. Sentinel studies conducted under the auspices of the WHO during the last four decades clearly documented that the control of the preceding infections and their sequelae is both cost effective and inexpensive. Without doubt, appropriate public health control programs and optimal medical care reduce the burden of disease (1–6)....

This switch from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism, Pasteur's effect, maintains some, albeit markedly reduced, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. In severe hypoxia, when ATP production is inadequate to meet the energy requirements of ionic and osmotic equilibrium, cell membrane depolarization leads to uncontrolled Ca2+ influx and activation of Ca2+-dependent phospholipases and proteases. These events, in turn, cause cell swelling and ultimately cell necrosis.
