This work demonstrated the potential of US for mitigating membrane fouling. However, the integration of the US transducers within the membrane system will be a major challenge for the application of US in membrane cleaning. It is more appropriate that US is used as pre-treatment to the membrane system, the transducers can be placed prior to the coagulant feed line. Further work on the determination of the detailed mechanisms associated with enhancing coagulation would enable optimisation of the system with regard to process, cost and energy efficiency.

The research herein builds on the work of Rojek (2003) and further investigates the bioremediation of NOM wastes. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of selected white-rot fungi and yeast for the biodegradative removal of concentrated NOM from solution. The effectiveness of the white-rot fungus P. chrysosporium ATCC 34541 for the biological degradation of different batches of MIEXTM NOM concentrate and the effects of different characteristics of the NOM on the process and thus the resistance of the NOM to microbial removal were investigated.

Sugarcane juice is commonly used as a delicious drink in both urban and rural areas. Sugarcane juice is spoiled quickly due to the presence of simple sugars. Preservation of sugarcane juice was examined to reduce the spoilage and to increase the shelf life by membrane processing. A study was carried out to preserve sugarcane juice by membrane processing and compared with the untreated juice.

In avian species, an egg envelope homologous to the mammalian zona pellucida is called the perivitelline membrane. We have previously reported that one of its components, a glycoprotein homologous to mammalian ZPC, is synthesized in the granulosa cells of the quail ovary. In the present study, we investigated the proteolytic cleavage of the newly synthesized ZPC and the secretion of ZPC from the granulosa cells. Western blot analysis of the cell lysates demonstrated that the 43-kDa protein is the precursor of mature ZPC (proZPC), and is converted to the 35-kDa protein before secretion. ...

A severe challenge to the idea that mitochondrial DNA mutations play a major role in the aging process in mammals is that clear loss-of-function mutations accumulate only to very low levels (under 1% of total) in almost any tissue, even by very old age. Their accumulation is punctate: some cells become nearly devoid of wild-type mitochondrial DNA and exhibit no activity for the partly mitochondrially encoded enzyme cytochrome c oxidase. Such cells accumulate in number with aging, suggesting that they survive indefinitely, which is itself paradoxical....

As an adaptation process to the growth retardation provoked by the presence of nonlethal concentrations of ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitors, Ustilago maydis alters the ratio of linoleic to oleic acid bound to plasma membrane ´ complex lipids [Hernandez, A., Cooke, D.T., Lewis, M. & Clarkson, D.T. (1997) Microbiology 143, 3165–3174]. This alteration increases plasma membrane H+-ATPase hydrolytic activity.

The adenosine A2a receptor belongs to the seven trans-membrane helix G-protein-coupled receptor family, is abundant in striatum, vasculature and platelets and is involved in several physiological processes such as blood pressure regulation and protection of cells during anoxia. For structural and biophysical studies we have expressed the human adenosine A2areceptor (hA2aR) at high levels inserted into the Escherichia coliinner membrane, and established a puri®cation scheme.

ThemaltoseATP-binding cassette transporter ofSalmonella typhimurium is composed of a membrane-associated com-plex (MalFGK2) and a periplasmic receptor (MalE). In addition to its role in transport, the complex acts as a repressor ofmaltose-regulatedgene expressionand is subject to inhibition in the process of inducer exclusion. These activities are thought to be mediated by interactions of the ATPase subunit, MalK, with the transcriptional activator, MalT, and nonphosphorylated enzyme IIA of the glucose phosphotransferase system, respectively. ...

BACE2 (Memapsin 1) is a membrane-bound aspartic pro-tease that is highlyhomologouswithBACE1 (Memapsin 2). While BACE1 processes the amyloid precursor protein (APP) at a key step in generating theb-amyloid peptide and presumably causes Alzheimer’s disease (AD), BACE2 has not been demonstrated to be directly involved in APP pro-cessing, and its physiological functions remain to be deter-mined.In vivo, BACE2 is expressed as a precursor protein containing pre-, pro-, protease, transmembrane, and cyto-solic domains/peptides....

The major components of neuritic plaques found in Alzheimer disease (AD) are peptides known as amyloid b-peptides (Ab),which derive from the proteolitic cleavage of theamyloidprecursorproteins.InvitroAbmayundergoa conformational transition from a soluble form to aggrega-ted,fibrillary b-sheet structures, which seem to be neuro-toxic. Alternatively,it has been suggested that ana-helical form can be involved in a process of membrane poration, which would then trigger cellular death.

Targeting of proteins to and translocation across the membranes is a fundamental biological process in all organisms. In bacteria, the twin arginine translocation (Tat) system can transport folded proteins. Here, we demonstrate in vivo that the high potential iron-sulfur protein (HiPIP) from Allochromatium vinosumis trans-located into the periplasmic space by the Tat system of Escherichia coli. In vitro, reconstituted HiPIP precursor (preHoloHiPIP) was targeted to inverted membrane vesicles from E. ...

The intracellular role of placental protein 17b (PP17b)/ TIP47has been controversial, because it is considered tobe a protein required for mannose 6-phosphate receptor trans-port from endosome totrans-Golgi as well as a neutral lipid droplet-associatedprotein.The similaritybetween theamino acid sequences of PP17 variants, adipophilin and perilipins, andbetween their gene structures indicate that PP17baswell as other alternatively spliced PP17 variants belong to the lipid storage droplet protein family, containing also some differentiation factors....

Topogenesis of cytochrome P450scc, a resident proteinof the inner membrane of adrenocortical mitochondria, is still obscure. In particular, little is known about the cause of its tissue specificity. In an attempt to clarify this point, we examined the process in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells synthesizing cytochrome P450scc as its native precursor (pCYP11A1) or versions inwhich its N-terminal addressing presequence had been replaced with those of yeast mitoch-ondrial proteins: CoxIV(1–25) and Su9(1–112)....

Tumor necrosis factor-a converting enzyme (TACE or ADAM17) is a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase) family of type I membrane proteins and mediates the ectodomain shedding of various membrane-anchored signaling and adhesion proteins. TACE is syn-thesized as an inactive zymogen, which is subsequently proteolytically processed to the catalytically active form.We have identified the proprotein-convertases PC7 and furin to be involved in maturation of TACE.

Cleavage of the arylglycerolb-aryl ether linkage is the most important process in the biological degradation of lignin. Thebacterialb-etherasewasdescribedpreviouslyandshown to be tightly associated with the cellular membrane. In this study, we aimed to detect and isolate a new extracellular function that catalyses theb-aryl ether linkage cleavage of high-molecular lignin in the soil fungi. We screened and isolated 2BW-1 cells by using a highly sensitive fluorescence assay system.

Folate is an essential vitamin involved in a number of biological processes. High affinity folate binding proteins (FBPs) exist both as glycosylphospha-tidylinositol-linked, membrane associated folate binding proteins and as soluble FBPs in plasma and some secretory fluids such as milk, saliva and semen. The function and significance of FBPs are unresolved, however, it has been suggested that they may facilitate folate uptake, e.g. during suck-ling.
