  • There is no general consensus on how to define various risk-related terms, including the term “risk” itself, and people may have different views on how those terms apply to their particular organization. Both fund boards and advisers would benefit from establishing a common understanding of the terms and concepts they use in risk-related discussions, as well as how they apply to their funds. Some advisers include definitions or descriptions of how they view risk and risk management in their board presentations.

  • Following are writing samples that have been annotated to illustrate the criteria required to meet the Common Core State Standards for particular types of writing—argument, informative/explanatory text, and narrative—in a given grade. Each of the samples exhibits at least the level of quality required to meet the Writing standards for that grade. The range of accomplishment within each grade reflects differences in individual development as well as in the conditions under which the student writers were expected to work.

  • When you buy your first car, you experience an increase in demand for gasoline because gasoline is pretty useful for cars and not so much for other things. An imminent hurricane increases the demand for plywood (to protect windows), batteries, candles, and bottled water. An increase in demand is represented by a movement of the entire curve to the northeast (up and to the right), which represents an increase in the marginal value v (movement up) for any given unit, or an increase in the number of units demanded for any given price (movement to the right). ...

  • In January 2010, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton articulated a powerful vision of the Internet as promoting freedom and global political transformation and rewriting the rules of political engagement and action. Her vision resembles that of others who argue that new media technologies facilitate participatory politics and mass mobilization, help promote de- mocracy and free markets, and create new kinds of global citizens. Some observers have even suggested that Twitter’s creators should receive the Nobel Peace Prize for their role in the 2009 Iranian protests.

  • The visual stimulation offered by both black and red markings amongst a herd of greyish cattle is not to be doubted. It might be expected, then, that it should be the pure black or red beasts which are most highly valued. This is not the case, for while the appreciation of well marked beasts should be understood in the context of a dull and pale landscape and herds preponderantly off-white in colour, it is the contrast of black and white or red and white in the single beast which provides the greatest aesthetic satisfaction. The individual beast, then, provides...

  • Thus, mutual funds, while going by a variety of names, are fairly comparable around the globe. 8 In this paper, we contrast mutual funds with other ways in which households might save and invest in financial assets, which we characterize broadly as “do-it-yourself (DIY)” and “opaque financial intermediaries.” Whereas a mutual fund is defined as a pooled diversified investment vehicle, “do-it- yourself” investments are direct investments by households in primary securities (bonds, stocks or cash).

  • Constructivism is the bedrock on which the whole reform movement, especially the three NCTM volumes [N1]-[N3], rests. Roughly, this is the education philosophy which holds that the acquisition of knowledge takes place only when the external input has been internalized and integrated into one’s own mind. Thus learning requires the construction of a mental image in response to the external input.

  • The project was characterised by high uncertainty, since neither cost nor time could be accurately estimated. Times of completion were based on probabilities: optimistic, pessimistic, and most likely. This led to what has come to be known as the programme evaluation review technique (PERT). Later a new methodology known as project planning and scheduling (PPS) was introduced in the private sector. PPS required realistic estimates of cost and time, and was considered more definitive than PERT.

Changes in currency exchange rates may influence the value of a sub-fund's Shares, the dividends or interest earned and the gains and losses realised.

  • Over the last two decades the issue of asylum in the UK has become increasingly controversial and emotive, successive governments have focused on reducing the number of asylum applications in the UK and on increasing the number of asylum seekers who are removed because their applications are unsuccessful. 30 Policies include visa sanctions, air- carriers liability, the increased use of detention, anti-smuggling operations, the deployment of UK immigration officers beyond UK territories and the use of airline liaison officers.

  • The ultimate responsibility for prudential standard-setting and supervision for Tier 1 FHCs must rest with a single regulator. The public has a right to expect that a clearly identifiable entity, not a committee of multiple agencies, will be answerable for setting standards that will protect the financial system and the public from risks posed by the potential failure of Tier 1 FHCs.

  • You might be surprised to discover the point of view held by the person who assigned the project to you. In some cases, executives are supportive; in others they are surprised that you can’t solve all problems on your own. Some executives assume that a capable project manager never has to ask for help and that you are competent enough to handle all problems without involving someone else. Given the uncertain nature of some projects and the cultural status in many companies, such points of view may be unrealistic.

  • Scoring Extended- and Short-Response Items Extended- and short-response items are evaluated according to an established scoring scale, called a rubric, developed from a combination of expectations and a sample of actual student responses. Such rubrics must be particularized by expected work and further developed by examples of student work in developing a guide for scorers. Illinois educators play a substantial role in developing these guides used for the scoring of the short- and extended-response items.

Many different route choices exist including segments of motorway, busy arterials and quieter streets. There is also a commuter train that runs directly into the city centre. • Empirical studies which explicitly examine the link between popula- tion and pollution in a systematic quantitative manner are very few in number. Cramer (1998, 2002) and Cramer and Cheney (2000) examine the impact of population levels on air pollution in California and conclude that population is closely associated with some sources of emissions but not with others. Cramer’s and Cramer and Cheney’s focus on a single state in a developed country is interesting, but it also means that the global impli- cations of their work are uncertain.

  • We can now see how aesthetic pleasure in what we called narrative entities (events, actions, states of affairs, etc.) can be conceived as being related exclusively to objects of the same sort as is pleasure in expression, i.e. to empathy- and sympathy- feelings within oneself. For the aesthetic relevance of the events, actions and processes represented in a painting or novel is seen to be confined exclusively to the feeling-material in the spectator to which they give rise. The suffering of Gretchen is aesthetically relevant only to the extent that it is capable of...

  • The analysis is based on a comprehensive data-set covering all limited firms in Sweden during the period 1997-2005. HGFs are defined as the one percent fastest growing firms in the population. The population is continuing firms, i.e., firms existing throughout a particular time period. Firm growth is calculated over three, five and seven years. The total growth of firms is studied, i.e., the sum of organic and acquired growth. In general, the correlation between the nine groups of HGFs is low, suggesting that different firms are included among HGFs depending on definition.

In the first phase, all dissertations conducted an outside-in analysis of resource allocations at a selected case study company using a common methodology developed by Schmidt (2000) and further refined by the research team (Müller-Stewens and Schmidt, 2003).
