The modified atmospheres generated by LifeSpan L201 and LDPE delayed pericarp browning, maintained the total soluble solids (TSS) and vitamin C content, and reduced decay in longan fruit. Meanwhile, the PP packaging resulted in an improperly modified atmosphere which led to severe decay and browning in cold storage conditions.

Respiration rate, sensory attributes, change in color, physiological loss in weight, chlorophyll and beta - carotene content and microbial loads were determined during storage of mint leaves at 10 and 27ᵒC to find an optimal gas composition to extend the shelf life. The Low Density Poly Ethylene (LDPE) bags with a thickness of 152 µ which recorded the lowest permeability to oxygen (1067 ml/m2 /day) was selected and used for packaging mint leaves.

The effect of time and temperature on the respiration rate (RR) of fresh-cut produce is critical towards the development of a suitable modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) system. This requires an adequate mathematical model for prediction of RR as a function of both time and temperature. This study investigated the effect of temperature (5, 10 and 15 °C) and storage time of 1 to 5 days on the RR (RO2 and RCO2) of two pomegranate cultivars (cv. „Bhagwa‟ and„Ganesh‟) fresh arils. RO2 and RCO2 were within the range of 2.54 to 8.36 ml/kg.h and 2.76 to 10.04 ml/kg.

The study of sensory parameters for stored samples of Bengal gram, gram dhal and gram flour in different were observed at every interval of 30 days. Samples were kept in laminated LDPE bags under different packaging conditions i.e. vacuum packaging, modified atmosphere packaging and ambient conditions for 120 days. The effect of packaging on the sensory parameters of stored samples viz., colour, appearance, flavor, texture, taste and overall acceptability were found by 9 point Hedonic Scale.

Nutritional quality of maize kernel artificially infested by Sitophilus oryzae and exposed to four different CO2 concentrations viz., 20, 40, 60 and 80 per cent in modified atmosphere was studied upto six months of storage. The results revealed that exposure of kernels to 80 per cent CO2 concentration could able to maintain good per cent of carbohydrates (72.93 per cent), total proteins (8.67 per cent), crude fat (5.07 per cent) and crude fibre (2.40 per cent) upto six months of storage followed by 60 per cent CO2 concentration.

Presently, fresh fruit are most demanded in the market because of its good nutritional value. Due to perishable nature of fruit, it has a very short shelf life. Major losses in quality and quantity of fresh fruit occur by microorganisms, insects, pre and post harvesting conditions during transport and preservation. In the modern era, the application of bio based material as a way of enhancing the shelf life of highly perishable produce is promising.

Jackfruit is considered as heavenly fruit by ancient people of Southern parts of India. It is a rich source of vitamins, minerals and calories and offers numerous health benefits. The fruit is highly perishable due to its inherent compositional and textural characteristics. Proper postharvest technology for prolonging shelf life is necessary to makes its availability throughout the year.

The cured tubers of variety Kufri Chipsona-4 were subjected to the sprout inhibiting treatment viz., hot water dip treatment (57.5±0.1 oC for 20 min) along with control and were packed in nylon mesh bags, MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) and vacuum packaging. The tubers were stored for 5 weeks at room temperature conditions (32±2oC; RH ~90%)and sampled at 7- day interval. A progressive increase in decay loss and shriveling of potato tubers was observed during storage. Hot water dip treated tubers showed significantly lower decay loss and shriveling than untreated tubers.

Custard apple (Sitaphal) is a yellowish green fruit of the family of plant species Annona. The postharvest system for these fruits is not yet adequately developed, and therefore several handling problems are still common. Rapid softening of fruits after harvest, especially during transportation and marketing is a major ongoing problem. The shelf-life of custard apple fruit can be enhanced upto 12 days in modified atmosphere storage at 10°C, whereas pulp can be stored for six months with potassium meta-bisulphite.
