Genomic analysis of the molecular neuropathology of tuberous sclerosis using a human stem cell model
Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disease characterized by benign tumor growths in multiple organs and neurological symptoms induced by mTOR hyperfunction. Because the molecular pathology is highly complex and the etiology poorly understood, we employed a defined human neuronal model with a single mTOR activating mutation to dissect the disease-relevant molecular responses driving the neuropathology and suggest new targets for treatment.

Adult-onset leukoencephalopathies are a group of heterogeneous disorders characterized by white matter abnormalities. Leukoencephalopathy is usually encountered in children, but here we report a case with adultonset leukoencephalopathy. Also, we explore this concept of uncertainty in medicine by discussing the approach to this case that has multiple possible etiologies.

Sarcoidosis is a disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by non-caseating granulomas in multiple organs. It can involve the lung in various forms. Nodular involvement is a rare form of pulmonary sarcoidosis which can be mistaken for malignancy. Diagnosis requires compatible clinical picture along with imaging findings suggestive of the disease and noncaseating granulomas on histopathology.

A hepatic abscess is a rare condition which can have multiple etiologies, including biliary disease, intra-abdominal collections (appendicitis, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease), abdominal surgery, liver transplantation, and liver trauma. The diagnosis is primarily based on imaging findings of ultrasound and computed tomography scan.

Multiple cranial neuropathies carry a wide range of differential diagnoses, and when combined with cerebrospinal fluid monocytosis they often suggest an infective etiology. Reactivation of varicella-zoster virus has been associated with a wide range of neurological complications.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a frequent complication in elderly patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery, but its etiology is still unclear. Cerebral oxygen saturation (ScO2) represents the balance of cerebral oxygen supply and demand.

Coxiella burnetii is the etiological agent of Q fever, a zoonosis affecting many animal species including sheep and goats. The aims of this study were to evaluate the shedding of Coxiella burnetii in small ruminant herds and to identify the pathogen’s genotypes and sequence types (STs) using multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) and multispacer sequence typing (MST) methods.

The etiology and pathophysiology of sarcoidosis remains unclear, with epidemiologic studies limited by its relatively low prevalence. The internet has prompted patients to seek information about medical diagnoses online; Google Trends provides access to an anonymized version of this data, which has a new role in epidemiology.

The spectrum of somatic single-nucleotide variants in cancer genomes often reflects the signatures of multiple distinct mutational processes, which can provide clinically actionable insights into cancer etiology. Existing software tools for identifying and evaluating these mutational signatures do not scale to analyze large datasets containing thousands of individuals or millions of variants.

Multiple rice bodies (RB) in the shoulder joint is a rare disorder of unknown etiology that requires percutaneous drainage or surgical operation. Case presentation: We reported arthroscopic removal of hundreds of RB in the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa in two cases by our “chopsticks technique”. One was associated with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis and the other was a rare synovial origin possibly due to microinfarction and ischemia after the radiotherapy.

Modic changes (MC) in the lumbar spine are considered one potential etiological factor behind low back pain (LBP). Multiple risk factors for MC have been suggested, including male gender, smoking and factors affecting hyperloading and mechanical stress such as high body mass index (BMI), strenuous physical work and high occupational and leisure-time physical activity (PA).

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies characterized by absolute or relative deficiency of insulin secretion with or without varying degree of insulin resistance. Sedentary life style and obesity are two major epidemiological determinants of diabetes mellitus. In the present investigation hypoglycemic efficacy of methanol extract of Catharanthus roseus (Nayantara) of Apocyanaceae and Opuntia ficusindica of Cactaceae was tested on STZ induced mice diabetic models.

Mutational signatures are specific patterns of somatic mutations introduced into the genome by oncogenic processes. Several mutational signatures have been identified and quantified from multiple cancer studies, and some of them have been linked to known oncogenic processes. Identification of the processes contributing to mutations observed in a sample is potentially informative to understand the cancer etiology.

Bovine respiratory infection is considered as most important factor of economic losses in dairy herds attributed through calf mortality and reduced performances. Most of the viral etiologies in respiratory infection go unnoticed due to supervene by secondary bacterial infection. Serological presence of antibodies reflects the distribution of infectious agents in herd(s) and may be helpful for designing the prevention strategies in future.
