This study primarily concentrates on the metaphors used in economic reports. Its aim is to have an insight into how metaphors are correlated to human physical experience and constructed in economic reports. In addition, the analysis of this correlation will set foundation for later categorization of the source domains which are exploited in the metaphors in these economic reports.

(BQ) This paper reports an intelligent approach for process modeling and optimization of electric discharge machining (EDM). Physics based process modeling using finite element method (FEM) has been integrated with the soft computing techniques like artificial neural networks (ANN) and genetic algorithm (GA) to improve prediction accuracy of the model with less dependency on the experimental data.

The phenomenon of the transformation of proteins into amyloid-fibrils is of interest, firstly, because it is closely connected to the so-called conformational diseases, many of which are hitherto incurable, and secondly, because it remains to be explained in physical terms (energetically and structurally). The process leads to fibrous aggregates in the form of extracellular amyloid plaques, neuro-fibrillary tangles and other intracytoplasmic or intranuclear inclusions.

InHIV the viral envelope protein is processed by a host cell protease toformgp120andgp41.TheC1andC5domainsof gp120 are thought to directly interact with gp41 but are largely missing from the available X-ray structure. Bio-physical studies of theHIVgp120C5 domain (residues 489– 511 of HIV-1 strain HXB2), which corresponds to the carboxy terminal region of gp120, have been undertaken.

The search for endogenousdigitalishas led to the isolationof ouabain as well as several additional cardiotonic steroids of the cardenolide and bufadienolide type from blood, adre-nals, and hypothalamus. The concentration of endogenous ouabain is elevated in blood upon increased Na + uptake, hypoxia, and physical exercise.Changes in blood levels of ouabain upon physical exercise occur rapidly.

Mammalian alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH) 3 form a com-plex enzyme system based on amino-acid sequence, func-tional properties, and gene expression pattern. At least four mouseAdhgenes are known to encode dierent enzyme classes that share less than 60% amino-acid sequence iden-tity. Two ADH-containing and overlapping C57BL/6 bacterial arti®cial chromosome clones, RP23-393J8 and -463H24, were identi®ed in a library screen, physically mapped, and sequenced.

ThenblAfamily of genes encodes for small proteins neces-sary for the ordered degradation of phycobilisomes under certain stress conditions, a process known as chlorosis. Genes homologous tonblAseem to occur in all phycobili-some-containingorganisms.However, todate, nomolecular mechanism is known for the action of NblA, nor have the gene products been characterized to understand the physical properties of the molecule and thus help elucidate the mechanism on a structural basis.

The interaction of bacterial endotoxins [lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and theendotoxic principle lipid A], with high-den-sity lipoprotein (HDL) from serum was investigated with a variety of physical techniques and biological assays. HDL exhibited an increase in the gel to liquid crystalline phase transition temperature Tc and a rigidification of the acyl chains of the endotoxins as measured by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanningcalorimetry.

The classical metabolic control theory [Kacser, H. & Burns, J.A. (1973)Symp.Soc.Exp.Biol. 27, 65–104; Heinrich, R. & Rapoport, T. (1974)Eur. J. Biochem.42, 89–95.] does not take into account experimental evidence for correlations between enzyme concentrations in the cell. We investigated the implications of two causes of linear correlations: competition between enzymes, which is a mere physical adaptation of the cell to the limitation of resources and space, and regulatory correlations, which result from the existence of regulatory networks....

Endotoxin-neutralizingprotein (ENP) of the horseshoe crab isoneof themost potent neutralizersof endotoxins [bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)]. Here, we report on the inter-action of LPS with recombinant ENP using a variety of physical and biological techniques. In biological assays (Limulusamebocyte lysate and tumour necrosis factor-a induction in human mononuclear cells), ENP causes a strong reduction of the immunostimulatory ability of LPS in a dose-dependent manner.

L-Arabinitol 4-dehydrogenase (Lad1) of the cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic fungusHypocrea jecorina(anamorph: Trichoderma reesei) has been implicated in the catabolism ofL-arabinose, and genetic evidence also shows that it is involved in the catabolism of D-xylose in xylitol dehydrogenase (xdh1) mutants and of D-galactose in galactokinase (gal1) mutants of H. jecorina. In order to identify the substrate specificity of Lad1, we have recombinantly produced the enzyme inEscherichia coliand purified it to physical homogeneity....

The transient receptor potential channel vanilloid receptor subunit 1 (TRPV1) is amolecular integrator of physical and chemical stimuli in the peripheral nociceptor terminals. TRPV1 is an ionotropic channel that plays a critical role in both thermal nociception and inflammatoryhyperalgesia. Structure–function relationships are providing fundamental insights of the modular architecture of this neuronal recep-tor.

The introduction of noncanonical amino acids and bio-physical probes into peptides and proteins, and total or segmental isotopic labelling has the potential to greatly aid thedeterminationofproteinstructure, functionandprotein– protein interactions. To obtain a peptide as large as possible by solid-phase peptide synthesis, native chemical ligation was introduced to enable synthesis of proteins of up to 120 amino acids in length.

Surfactant-like membranes containing the 21-residue peptide KLLLL-KLLLLKLLLLKLLLLK (KL4 ), have been clinically tested as a therapeu-tic agent for respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants. The aims of this study were to investigate the interactions between the KL4 peptide and lipid bilayers, and the role of both the lipid composition and KL4 structure on the surface adsorption activity of KL4 -containing membranes.

Human amylin is a small fibrillogenic protein that is the major constituent of pancreatic islet amyloid, which occurs in most subjects with type 2 dia-betes. There is evidence that it can elicitin vitro apoptosis in isletb-cells, but the physical properties that underpin its cytotoxicity have not been clearly elucidated.

The nano-scale spatial organization of metallic and other inorganic materi-als into 1D objects is a key task in nanotechnology. Nano-scale fibers and tubes are very useful templates for such organization because of their inherent 1D organization. Fibrillar biological molecules and biomolecular assemblies are excellent physical supports on which to organize the inor-ganic material.

While the importance of Ca2+ channel activity in axonal path finding is established, the underlying mechanisms are not clear. Here, we show that transient receptor potential vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1), a member of the TRP superfamily of nonspecific ion channels, is physically and functionally present at dynamic neuronal extensions, including growth cones.

Enzymes from psychrophiles show higher catalytic efficiency in the 0–20C temperature range and often lower thermostability in comparison with meso⁄thermophilic homologs. Physical and chemical characterization of these enzymes is currently underway in order to understand the molecular basis of cold adaptation.
