This book outlines the currently available clinical, epidemiological and experimental data on Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) with special emphasis on studies and results achieved in Europe. The book also gives an overview on diagnostics, therapy and surveillance, all of which are still challenging. Therefore, a closer look is taken on the effect of probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics, for prevention and treatment of CDI.

Many studies show that hyperglycemia can lead to injury to the intestinal mucosal barrier, increasing the likelihood of infection, leading to intestinal inflammation in people with type 2 diabetes. Recently, investigations indicate that the gut microbiome plays a very important role in this disease in which Lactobacillus in the gut has been shown to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism, improving oxidative stress, and inhibiting inflammatory responses.

Nowadays, the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in livestock production leads to the appearance of antibiotic resistant strains that promotes the use of probiotics in feed to minimise/replace antibiotic consumption. Among them, Bacilli are common supplements for feed effectiveness and livestock health benefits.

Lactic acid bacteria have been advocated as probiotics to replace antibiotic growth promoters, improve growth performance, and reduce cost production in swine farming. The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the probiotic traits of strain LCN13 isolated from traditionally fermented feed for swine.

Products containing beneficial bacteria for humans have been widely used recently. The bacteria in these products generally belong to the genus Lactobacillus. Among the species of this genus, Lactobacillus casei attracts a lot of interest due to their valuable properties. With these properties, many L. casei strains can be used as probiotics.

Bifidobacterium is anerobic bacterium which is popular in human and animal intestine. B. infantis was successfully isolated from a new-born child’s fecal sample previously. In this study, the probiotic characteristics of this strain such as: extracellular enzyme production ability; antibiotic activity against food-born pathogen like E. coli, S. aureus; organic acid production and bile-salt sufferance were evaluated.

Bacillus clausii has been used as probiotic bacteria in dietary supplements because of its main probiotic activities, including its multi-antibiotic resistance, digestive enzyme production, vitamin synthesis, and immunomodulatory effects. In this study, heat, and acid-stability, acute and sub-acute toxicity were conducted to evaluate the stability and safety of liquid-suspension probiotics (LiveSpo® Clausy, LiveSpo Pharma) containing spores of Bacillus clausii ANA39 strain at ≥ 2 billion CFU/5 mL.

Bacteria strains isolated from plant leaves of papaya, cassava, sugarcane, yam, and taro, were investigated for their potential probiotic properties. Four isolates from food crop plant leaves were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus paraplantarum, and Weissella paramesenteroides by sequence of 16S rDNA.

In the current study, five Lactobacillus gasseri MA strains from human breast milk were investigated for their usage potentials in aquaculture and seafood products as probiotic and bio-protective. The strains were tested for their susceptibilities to various clinical antibiotics used in fish cultivation, antimicrobial activities against seven fish pathogens, alpha-amylase enzyme activities, and susceptibilities to sodium benzoate which used as a food preservative.

The rheological and biotechnological parameters of yoghurt fermented with S. thermophilus IMV B-7249 strain immobilized in a hydrogel were evaluated. It was determined that the functional state of the culture immobilized in highly dispersed silica remained corresponded to the proper technological parameters of sour-milk yoghurt, and the effective viscosity and stability of the product increased. This makes it possible to recommend such a preparation for a use not only for enteral use but also for the production of fermented milk products.

This study investigates the possible synergistic stimulatory effects of prebiotic chitooligosaccharide and some commercial prebiotics on probiotic growth. Different combination of chitooligosaccharide with inulin, fructooligosaccharide, and lactulose were prepared and their ability to stimulate the growth of probiotic strains was evaluated. Following Chou-Talalay method, the combination index was calculated and used for synergistic assessment.

Morphological, biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequences were used as a tool for bacterial identification. Both STR 0103f and STR 0404f isolates were identified as Rummeliibacillus sp. which are Rummeliibacillus pycnus STR 0103f and Rummeliibacillus stabekisii STR 0404f, respectively. Thus, R. pycnus STR 0103f and R. stabekisii STR 0404f would be the novel bacterial strains from fermented vegetable products that act as the potential probiotic candidates for safety food bio-preservation.

The objective of this study was to investigate the beneficial, virulence, and antibiotic resistance-related genes in 10 well-characterized bacteriocinogenic LAB strains. The autoaggregation, co-aggregation, cell surface hydrophobicity, and bile salt tolerance were also evaluated to examine their potential as bacteriocinogenic probiotics and/or starter culture. Results showed that all tested strains showed abilities for auto-aggregation at 4oC and 37oC, co-aggregation with S. aureus JCM8704, S. typhimurium BIOTECH1826, and E. coli DH5α, and significant cell-surface hydrophobicity.

Enterococcus faecium though commensal in the human gut, few strains provide a beneficial effect to humans as probiotics while few are responsible for the nosocomial infection. Comparative genomics of E. faecium can decipher the genomic differences responsible for probiotic, pathogenic and non-pathogenic properties. In this study, we compared E. faecium strain 17OM39 with a marketed probiotic, non-pathogenic non-probiotic (NPNP) and pathogenic strains.
