Using amino acids for synthesis of heterocycles is a synthetically promising field. However, developing the practical methods for transformations of amino acids into heterocycles is still challenging. Given that alpha amino acids are abundant or easily prepared, herein we report a method for annulation of benzylic C-H bonds in derivatives of 2-phenylglycine with 1-(2-nitroaryl) pyrroles.

Several 5-(alkylsulfonyl)-1-substituted-2-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole derivatives were synthesized and their antioxidant activities were investigated using lipid peroxidation (LPO) and 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) assays. Docking analysis with Human NAD[P]H-Quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) was also performed to gather thorough information about these compounds that have antioxidant activities.

This review article represents a survey covering the synthetic strategies leading to 5-membered heterocycles. The reactions are subdivided into groups that cover the synthetic methods of those heterocycles, i.e. pyrroles, furans, thiophenes, pyrazoles, isoxazoles, thiazoles, and others, utilizing benzoylacetonitriles as starting precursor from 1985 up to the present. The reactions are subdivided into groups that cover the synthetic methods for those heterocycles from benzoylacetonitriles.

Calix[4]pyrrole derivatives with bulky substituents at their meso-positions were synthesized via mixed condensation of pyrrole with cyclohexanone and acetophenone derivatives. Anion binding studies, carried out by isothermal titration calorimetry in 1,2-dichloroethane with Cl− and CH3CO−2 anions in the form of their tetrabutylammonium salts, revealed that these new calix[4]pyrrole derivatives can bind the aforementioned anions as effectively as the unsubstituted “parent” system, octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole (1).

Natural and synthetic derivatives that contain an indole core are being used in medical treatments and technological processes. Therefore, the development of new synthetic methods for the synthesis of indole derivatives is very popular. In this study, new oxindoles with reaction of 4,7-dihydro-1H -indole (2) and isatin (4) were synthesized as analogs of natural product 3,3′ -bis(indolyl)oxindole.

A novel alkoxy-bridged dithieno (3, 2-B:2’,3’-D) pyrrole (DTP) derivative was synthesized and its corresponding polymer poly(1,2-bis(2-(4H-dithieno[3,2-b:2’,3’-d]pyrrol-4-yl)ethoxy)ethane) (P(DTP-alkoxy-DTP)) was successfully obtained electrochemically. The effects of alkoxy bridge in the structure on the electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of the polymer were also investigated in detail. The results showed that the polymer film exhibits multielectrochromic behavior and a low band gap of 1.82 eV.

Silver(I)-selective sensors were prepared from a solid-state contact polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane. (Z)-2-(2-((3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-(p-tolyl)-1H -pyrrol-2-yl)imino)-5-(p-tolyl)-2H -pyrrol-3-yl)phenol was synthesized as an ionophore molecule and embedded in the silver(I)-selective PVC membrane composition. The sensor was also successfully applied in the analysis of real water samples. In real water samples prepared by standard addition method, recoveries in the range of 82.30%–95.15% were obtained.

Dipyrromethanes are useful mediator structures which can be used as a part of other molecules such as bis-porphyrins and their derivations. Various methods have been developed for their synthesis. This study presents the synthesis of a new bisdipyrromethane, 7,12-bis(4-(di(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methyl)phenyl)benzo[k]fluoranthene, using the Lewis acid catalyzed reaction between a new dialdehyde and pyrrole at room temperature. The UV spectroscopic and fluorometric properties of the final product and precursors were determined.

Tetramic acid, thiophene and hydrazone derivatives were found to exhibit favorable antifungal activity. Aiming to discover novel template molecules with potent antifungal activity, a series of novel 3-(thiophen-2-yl)-1,5-dihydro-2H-pyrrol-2-one derivatives containing a hydrazone group were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their antifungal activity.

Some derivatives of formazanes containing furane, thiophene and pyrrole were synthesised by the condensation of hydrazones with aryldiazonium salts at 0 - 5o C. The products were seperated and purified by column chromatography and recrystallisation in ethanol. They are red or violet-red crystals. Their structures were identified by IR-, UV-, 1 H-NMR and mass spectra.
