Ebook "Use of microbes for the alleviation of soil stresses, Volume 1" describes the most important details and advances related to the alleviation of soil stresses by soil microbes. Comprised of seven chapters, the book reviews the mechanisms by which plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) alleviate plant growth under stress; the role of mycorrhizal fungi on the alleviation of drought stress in host plants; how PGPR may alleviate salinity stress on the growth of host plants; and the role of PGPR on the growth of the host plant under the stress of sub optimal root zone temperature.

Owing to their sessile nature, plants are easily affected by various extenal factors. Among those, drought and salinity are considered as the most common stresses, which often pose a threat to plant growth and development. Major effects of the drought and salinity are interconnected and drive similar series of molecular changes in plants.

Cytokinins (CKs) are considered one of the critical phytohormones with an important role in plant response to abiotic stresses. One of the key enzymes in regulating CK levels is CK oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX), which catalyzes the irreversible CK degradation.

Salinity is one of the most devastating abiotic stresses limiting crop production. Considering this issue, a pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the boro season (2017-2018) using two rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties, namely BRRI dhan28 (salt sensitive) and BRRI dhan47 (salt tolerant), to assess the effects of varied salinity levels on the growth and the performance of the rice varieties under salt stress conditions.

This study was conducted to evaluate the salt tolerance ability of two soybean cultivars under salinity conditions using a selection of growth and physiological parameters. Three weeks after germination, plants began being treated with either a 100 mM concentration of NaCl in Hoagland solution or a non-salinity (0 mM NaCl) solution.

The tertiary gene pool of bread wheat, to which Leymus racemosus belongs, has remained underutilized due to the current limited genomic resources of the species that constitute it. Continuous enrichment of public databases with useful information regarding these species is, therefore, needed to provide insights on their genome structures and aid successful utilization of their genes to develop improved wheat cultivars for effective management of environmental stresses.

The most important types of abiotic stress that affect agricultural crops throughout the world are drought and salinity. These stresses will continue to worsen as the current climate crisis progresses. Plants have evolved a complex set of mechanisms in order to protect themselves from salt and drought. At the macrobiological level, these include alterations in growth rate, water balance, antioxidant defenses, and photosynthesis.

Competition and environmental stress are crucial factors for structuring plant population in natural habitats. Cyperus arenarius, a sedge of coastal sand dunes habitat, is a suitable species for coastal restoration and dune stabilization, but how salinity and plant density interact in affecting its growth is still unknown. Here, growth, survival, and physiological responses of C. arenarius to salinity (sea-salt) and plant density were investigated.

The aim of this work was to understand involvement of PARylation in inducing enzymatic antioxidant defence and alternative electron sinks in response to salinity. For this purpose A. thaliana plants were treated with 3-aminobenzamide (3-AB), which is a PARP inhibitor, in the presence of 100 mM NaCl. The 3-AB treatment induced plant fresh weight under control and salinity conditions. Moreover, 100 mM NaCl + 3-AB treated plants had lower lipid peroxidation when compared to 100 mM NaCl group indicating mitigation of oxidative stress.

In this study, we identified the effect of different GO doses (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 mg/mL) on seed germination of melon (Cucumis melo L. cvs. ‘Hasanbey’, ‘Kırkağaç-589’, and ‘Kırkağaç-637’) seeds under the salinity stress. The effect of GO as a priming material showed variance depending on the GO dose, melon cultivars, and level of salinity stress. It was determined that the germination percentage and the length of the radicle were higher in GO primed seeds compared to the control in all the melon cultivars tested.

"Ameliorative effects of nitric oxide on growth, physiology and biochemistry of chickpea plants under salinity stress" was conducted to evaluate the effect of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) treatments on two chickpea cultivars (Cagatay and Inci) under salt stress conditions. Different NO doses (0. 75 and 100 µM sodium nitroprusside (SNP)) as an NO source were applied to chickpea plants grown under saline (presence of 50 and 100 mM of NaCl) and nonsaline conditions.

Biochar and PGPR applications mitigated the negative influence of salinity stress on plant growth and physiological and biochemical characteristics of eggplant seedlings, enhancing chlorophyll content, plant nutrient element uptake, and antioxidant enzyme activity. The enhanced salinity tolerance due to biochar and PGPR applications could be associated with a significant reduction in Na and Cl uptake, MDA, H2 O2 and EL and an increase in LRWC, chlorophyll content, antioxidant activity and plant nutrient element uptake.
