Salt affected environment

This study presents the synthesis of glucose-based surfactants including quaternary ammonium salts. Their surface properties and influence on the soil environment were investigated. The synthesized quaternary ammonium chlorides of glucose-based ester exhibited good surface tension reduction properties and formed stable foam in contact with water. The results showed that quaternary ester ammonium salts affect the activation of metals (nickel and cadmium) from the soil matrix after their introduction into the soil environment. This phenomenon can increase the bioavailability of these metals.

The study was performed with completely randomized factorial design having in triplicate. The experiment was carried out at the College of Environment and Natural Resources of Can Tho University from July to November 2018. Morphological toxic symptoms and growth inhibition were clearly observed in salt-treated treatments. Among the four studied species, T. orientalis produced the highest dry shoot biomass (15.5 g DW/plant), while E. dulcis had the lowest value (2.8 g DW/plant). However, only T. orientalis showed significantly decreased in biomass as salinity increased with 9.3 and 4.

Long term exhaustive cropping practice and indiscriminate use of poor quality water can result in accumulation of salts and sodium that adversely affect crop growth. Salinity and sodicity are the major soil degradation issues primarily in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. The sustainability of agriculture is a matter of deep concern due to widespread removal of nutrients in excess of their application resulting in depletion of major soil nutrient reserves. Nitrogen (N) use efficiency of applied N in saline and sodic soils is low.

Paper and pulp mills discharge large volumes of wastewater into the environment. Crop productivity can be improved by using this wastewater, which is rich in salts and nutrients, as an irrigation source improves crop productivity by supplying enormous amount of nutrients. But for a long termit leads to development of soil salinity and sodicity and also calcareousness.

Furthermore WFP is providing food assistance to vulnerable groups through institutional feeding and school feeding to around 90,000 beneficiaries. WFP also provides a general food ration consisting of cereals, CSB, sugar, fortified oil and iodised salt when available, to the rural population affected by the humanitarian crisis, the urban poor and IDPs. The plant response to salinity consists of numerous processes that must function in coordination to alleviate both cellular hyperosmolarity and ion disequilibrium. In addition, crop plants must be capable of satisfactory biomass production in a saline environment (yield stability).
