An advance in the treatment of schizophrenia is the development of long-acting intramuscular formulations of antipsychotics, such as olanzapine long-acting injection (LAI). During clinical trials, a post-injection syndrome characterized by signs of delirium and/or excessive sedation was identified in a small percentage of patients following injection with olanzapine LAI.

Objectives: Brain structure changes in schizophrenia (SZ) have been a focus for recent decades. To assess the frequency allele and genotypic distribution of polymorphism rs165599 in catechol-O-methyltransferase in Kinh ethnic-patients with schizophrenia. Subjects and methods: A case-control study consisted of 227 schizophrenic patients and 92 healthy controls in the Kinh ethnic. The rs165599 was genotyped by PCR-RFLP and statistical analysis was performed by Chi-Square test. Results: The frequency of allele A and G in schizophrenic patients were 72.36% and 69.94%, respectively. The frequency of allele A and G in healthy controls were 27.64% and 30.06%, respectively (p > 0.05).

Childhood abuse has been implicated as an environmental factor that increases the risk for developing schizophrenia. A recent large population-based case–control study found that abuse may be a risk factor for schizophrenia in women, but not men. Given the sex differences in onset and clinical course of schizophrenia, we hypothesized that childhood abuse may cause phenotypic differences in the disorder between men and women.

Second-generation antipsychotics are commonly prescribed for pediatric patients with schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders despite their lack of approval for use in children. Although considered a safer alternative to first-generation antipsychotics, there is evidence to suggest that second-generation antipsychotics may be associated with some adverse events as well as an increase in prolactin levels.

Schizophrenia is a severe brain disorder, and SNPs (Single nucleotide polymorphism) in schizophrenia-associated miRNAs are believed to be one of the important reasons for dysregulation which might contribute to the altered expression of genes and ultimately result in the disease.

Schizophrenia is arguably the most serious major psychiatric disorder, usually developing in late adolescence or early adulthood, and often having a profound effect over the lifetime on daily functioning. People with schizophrenia frequently have difficulties living independently and caring for themselves, working or attending school, fulfilling parental or other role obligations, and enjoying close relationships and rewarding leisure activities (American Psychiatric Association, 2000).

There have been major changes in attitudes towards schizophrenia in recent years. In clinical practice, more effective pharmacological and psychological treatments for schizophrenia have helped regenerate a sense of therapeutic optimism. In research, progress in a range of basic disciplines has opened up new avenues which promise to help unravel the abnormalities of brain development, structure and function which are at the core of the disorder.

This book began as a collection of articles on neuropsychiatric disease, but with a clear focus on Schizophrenia, which is a poorly understood but very disabling group of brain disorders. We now recognize schizophrenia as a disorder of the brain, but despite advances in treatment options we are still a long way from having effective treatments, particularly for cognitive symptoms, and lack effective interventions and ways to prevent this disease.
