Skew normal distribution

  • An investigation was carried out to study the frequency distribution, variability parameters and character association of traits in F2 populations of rice from the cross BPT-5204 x WAB 450 for grain yield and its component characters. In general, the PCV was higher than the GCV for all the traits and small differences between PCV and GCV were recorded for morphological traits studied which indicates less influence of environment on these characters.

  • Traditional econometric modelling typically follows the idea that market returns follow a normal distribution. However, the concept of tail risk indicates that the distribution of returns is not normal, but skewed and has heavy tails. Thus, a heavy-tailed distribution, which accurately estimates the tail risk, would significantly improve quantitative risk management practice. In this paper, we compare four widely used heavy-tailed distributions using the S&P 500 daily returns.

  • The present investigation was assessed using 235 different F2 individuals, their parents and F1 for characters like plant height, moisture, phenol and chlorophyll. These characters are most important for identification of disease effect and characterization for resistance in plants or genotype. Here, in the present study F2 population was developed from the cross between AT-3 (Solanum lycopersicum L) and IIHR-2101 (Solanum habrochaites L.). Then characters which are mentioned above were studied.

  • The present investigation was assessed using 100 F2 individuals, their parents and F1 for characters days to flowering, plant height, panicle length, productive tillers per plant, number of grains per panicle, grain yield per plant, straw yield per plant and harvest index. These traits are most important for identification of good segregating plants or genotype. Here, in the present study F2 population was developed from the cross between GAR-13 (improved and high yielding cultivar) and Lalkada (local landrace).

  • Popular models of finance, fall short of accounting for most empirically found stylized features of financial time series data, such as volatility clustering, skewness and leptokurtic nature of log returns. In this study we propose a general framework for modeling asset returns which account for serial dependencies in higher moments and leptokurtic nature of scaled GARCH filtered residuals. Such residuals are calibrated to normal inverse Gaussian and hyperbolic distribution.

  • Fifty cotton genotypes were investigated for variability and genetic divergence regarding yield related attributes, seed cotton yield and fibre quality traits using principle component analysis. Eleven traits viz., days to flowering, plant height (cm), no of sympodia/plant, no of bolls, boll weight (g/plant), seed cotton yield (kg/ha), Micronnaire value, % Span length, Uniformity ratio, Bundle strength (g/tex) and Elongation ratio were recorded for the germplasm accessions. Maximum variation of about 17.

  • We propose a new approximate skew normal distribution, it is easy to calculate, convenient, mathematically tractable and is in a closed form. It is particularly useful when the probability density function occurs in an expression to be used for further mathematical derivation or in programs for the skew normal distribution. Also, we propose approximate first moment second moment and variance to the skew normal distribution. A numerical comparison between exact and approximate values of pdf and cdf of the skew normal distribution is carried out.

  • The present manuscript provides the necessary equations. To increase generality, the derivations presented are not based on the typical assumption that the samples come from the family of normally distributed populations but rather from the much larger family of skew normal distributions.

  • In this paper, we mainly consider the discrimination between these distributions. It is observed that the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) cannot be obtained in closed form.

  • Stable laws { also called -stable or Levy-stable { are a rich family of probability distributions that allow skewness and heavy tails and have many interesting mathematical properties. They appear in the context of the Generalized Central Limit Theorem which states that the only possible non-trivial limit of normalized sums of independent identically distributed variables is -stable. The Standard Central Limit Theorem states that the limit of normalized sums of independent identically distributed terms with nite variance is Gaussian ( -stable with = 2).

  • Third, we computed VAIs for each shot in each film. The purpose of these calculations was to determine the relative amount ofmotion andmovement in shots of different duration and whether that relation had changed over the course of 75 years of popular film. Since both dimensions, shot length and VAI per shot, are strongly skewed, we transformed each. We took the logarithmof each shot duration, and because VAI is based on correlations, we used the r-to-z transformfor VAIs. These transformations created roughly normal distributions along both dimensions for all films....
