The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in wild free ranging peafowls living in Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli districts of Southern Tamilnadu, through cross-sectional survey. A total of 72 freshly voided faecal samples were collected randomly from wild free ranging peafowls of either sex and of different age groups and were examined by direct faecal smear; flotation and sedimentation techniques to detect parasitic oocysts and/or eggs.

Thesis study of the composition of the parasitic nematodes in marine fishes in the off Vietnam is urgently needed. The survey’s results are not only provide the information about the fauna of fish’s nematoda, the relation between hosts-parasites, but also assess the the potential risks for human consumption.

Med. Zentrum fur Hygiene und Medizinische Mikrobiologie, Philipps-Universitat Marburg, Marburg, Germany Mannose analogues (2-deoxy-D -glucose, 2-deoxy-2-fluoroD -glucose and 2-amino-2-deoxy-D -mannose) have been used to study glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPtdIns) biosynthesis and GPtdIns protein anchoring in protozoal and mammalian systems. The effects of these analogues on GPtdIns biosynthesis and GPtdIns-protein anchoring of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum were evaluated in this study. ...

This study reports the identification and characterization of the regulatory subunit, TbRSU, of protein kinase A of the parasitic protozoon Trypanosoma brucei. TbRSU is coded for by a single copy gene. The protein contains an unusually long N-terminal domain, the pseudosubstrate site involved in binding and inactivation of the catalytic subunit, and two C-terminally located, closely spaced cyclic nucleotide binding domains.

Polydnaviruses are a unique group of insect viruses in terms of their obligate and symbiotic associations with some parasitic wasps. TheCotesia kariyaipolydnavirus (CkPDV) replicates only in ovarian calyxcells of C. kariyaifemale wasps and is injected into the wasp’s host, the armyworm Pseudaletia separata, along with the eggs. A previous study indicated the possibility that one of the CkPDV surface proteins mediates immunoevasion by the wasp from the encapsulation reaction of the host insect’s hemocytes....

Thefushi tarazu factor 1 (FTZ-F1) nuclear receptor sub-family comprises orphan receptors with crucial roles in development and sexual differentiation in vertebrates and invertebrates. We describe the structure and functional properties of an FTZ-F1 from the platyhelminth parasite of humans,Schistosoma mansoni, the first receptor from this family tobe characterized inaLophotrochozoan. It contains awell conservedDNA-binding domain (55–63%identity to other family members) and a poorly conserved ligand-binding domain (20% identity to that of zebrafish FF1a)....

ATP-regenerating enzymes may have an important role in maintaining ATP levels in mitochondria-like kinetoplast organelle and glycosomes in parasitic protozoa. Adenylate kinase (AK) (ATP:AMP phosphotransferase) catalyses the reversible transfer of thec-phosphate group from ATP to AMP, releasing twomolecules ofADP. This study describes cloningand functional characterizationof the gene encoding AK2fromagenomic libraryofLeishmaniadonovaniandalso its expression in leishmania promastigote cultures.

Mortality in the host armyworm larvaePseudaletia separata parasitized by the parasitic waspCotesia kariyaiwas dra-matically increased when they were simultaneously infected by the entomopathogen Serratia marcescens. Previous studies have shown that this strong insecticidal effect is due to a metalloprotease-like insecticide (MPLI)released from S. marcescensenterobacter. This study was conducted to elucidate the exact cause of the mortality resulting from MPLI.

Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate is a potent allosteric activator of trypanosomatid pyruvate kinase and thus represents an important regulator of energy meta-bolism in these protozoan parasites. A 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase, respon-sible for the synthesis of this regulator, was highly purified from the bloodstream form ofTrypanosoma bruceiand kinetically characterized. By searching trypanosomatid genome databases, four genes encoding proteins homologous to the mammalian bifunctional enzyme 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase⁄fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFK-2⁄FBPase-2) were found for both T. ...

In the present study, we investigated whetherPlasmodium falciparum1-Cys peroxiredoxin (Prx) (Pf1-Cys-Prx), a cytosolic protein expressed at high lev-els during the haem-digesting stage, can act as an antioxidant to cope with the oxidative burden of haem (ferriprotoporphyrin IX; FP). Recombinant Pf1-Cys-Prx protein (rPf1-Cys-Prx) competed with glutathione (GSH) for FP and inhibited FP degradation by GSH. When rPf1-Cys-Prx was added to GSH-mediated FP degradation, the amount of iron released was reduced to 23% of the reaction without the protein (P...

The ability ofEntamoeba histolyticaTATA binding protein (EhTBP) to interact with different TATA boxes in gene promoters may be one of the key factors to perform an efficient transcription in this human parasite. In this paper we used several TATA variants to study the in vitro EhTBP DNA-binding activity and to determine the TATA-EhTBP dissociation constants. The presence of EhTBP in complexes formed by nuclear extracts (NE) and the TATTTAAA oligonucleotide, which corresponds to the canonical TATA box for E. histolytica, was demonstrated by gel-shift assays. ...

Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) may be important in car-bohydrate and energymetabolism inmalarial parasites. The cDNA corresponding to the MDHgene, identified on chromosome 6 of thePlasmodium falciparumgenome, was amplified by RT-PCR, cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant PfMDH was purified to homogeneity and biochemically characterized as an NAD + (H)-specific MDH, which catalysed reversible inter-conversion of malate to oxaloacetate.

In recent years, the glycoconjugates of many parasitic nematodes have attracted interest due to their immunogenic and immunomodulatory nat-ure. Previous studies with the porcine roundworm parasiteAscaris suum have focused on its glycosphingolipids, which were found, in part, to be modified by phosphorylcholine.

A complex of chagasin, a protein inhibitor fromTrypanosoma cruzi, and papain, a classic family C1 cysteine protease, has been crystallized. Kinetic studies revealed that inactivation of papain by chagasin is very fast (kon= 1.5·10 6 m )1 Æs )1 ), and results in the formation of a very tight, reversible complex (Ki =36pm), with similar or better rate and equilib-rium constants than those for cathepsins L and B.
