This study tests the predictive ability of the Tuckman-Chang model by applying it to charitable organizations that survived and did not survive the Great Recession, an economic event that negatively affected the charitable sector. Charitable organizations listed in the 2006 IRS Statistics of Income Exempt Organizations Sample File (SOI), hosted by the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS) Data Archive, were compared to those listed in the 2011 IRS SOI File.

The crystal structure of citrate synthase from the thermo-philic ArchaeonSulfolobus solfataricus(optimum growth temperature ¼85C) has been determined, extending the number of crystal structures of citrate synthase from differ-ent organisms to a total of five that span the temperature range over which life exists (from psychrophile to hyper-thermophile). Detailed structural analysis has revealed possible molecular mechanisms that determine the different stabilities of thefiveproteins.

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) designate a class of proteins that are able tobind toand inhibit the growthofmacromolecular ice. These proteins have been characterized froma variety of organisms. Recently, the structures ofAFPs fromthe spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) and the yellow meal-worm (Tenebrio molitor) have been determined by NMR and X-ray crystallography. Despite nonhomologous sequences, both proteins were shown to consist ofb-helices.

Trehalose is a nonreducing disaccharide of glucose (a,a-1,1-glucosyl-glu-cose) that is essential for growth and survival of mycobacteria. These organisms have three different biosynthetic pathways to produce trehalose, and mutants devoid of all three pathways require exogenous trehalose in the medium in order to grow.

As sessile organisms that are unable to escape from inhospitable environ-ments, plants are at the mercy of the elements. Nonetheless, plants have managed to adapt, evolve and survive in some of the harshest conditions on earth.

It is becoming increasingly clear that signals generated in tumor microenvi-ronments are crucial to tumor cell behavior, such as survival, progression and metastasis. The establishment of these malignant behaviors requires that tumor cells acquire novel adhesion and migration properties to detach from their original sites and to localize to distant organs.

Immune Response The innate and acquired immune responses to L. monocytogenes have been studied extensively in mice. Shortly after IV injection, most bacteria are found in Kupffer cells in the liver, with some organisms in splenic macrophages. Listeriae that survive the bactericidal activity of initially infected macrophages grow in the cytosol and spread from cell to cell. In the liver, the result is infection of hepatocytes. Neutrophils are crucial to host defense during the first 24 h of infection, while influx of activated macrophages from the bone marrow is critical subsequently.

B. cereus can produce either a syndrome with a short incubation period— the emetic form, mediated by a staphylococcal type of enterotoxin—or one with a longer incubation period (8–16 h)—the diarrheal form, caused by an enterotoxin resembling E. coli LT, in which diarrhea and abdominal cramps are characteristic but vomiting is uncommon. The emetic form of B. cereus food poisoning is associated with contaminated fried rice; the organism is common in uncooked rice, and its heat-resistant spores survive boiling. If cooked rice is not refrigerated, the spores can germinate and produce toxin.

Inhalational Anthrax (See also Chap. 214) Inhalational anthrax, the most severe form of disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, had not been reported in the United States for more than 25 years until the recent use of this organism as an agent of bioterrorism (Chap. 214). Patients presented with malaise, fever, cough, nausea, drenching sweats, shortness of breath, and headache. Rhinorrhea was unusual. All patients had abnormal chest roentgenograms at presentation. Pulmonary infiltrates, mediastinal widening, and pleural effusions were the most common findings.

Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 89. Pancreatic Cancer Pancreatic Cancer: Introduction Over 90% of pancreatic cancers are ductal adenocarcinomas of the exocrine pancreas. These tumors occur twice as frequently in the pancreatic head compared to the rest of the organ, and tend to be aggressive, often presenting when locally inoperable or after distal metastases have occurred. Patients with pancreatic cancer have a poor prognosis, with a 5-year survival of only 5%. The discussion of pancreatic cancer here will be limited to ductal adenocarcinomas.
