  • In this paper, the effects of specimen size and crack length on the fracture toughness of polycrystalline graphite are studied. The experimental results reported in the previous studies showed that the fracture toughness of graphite increase in bigger specimen.

  • Shikimate kinase was chosen as a convenient representative example of the subclass of a/b proteins with which to examine the mechanism of protein folding. In this paper we report on the refolding of the enzyme after denaturation in urea. As shown by the changes in secondary and tertiary structure monitored by far UV circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence, respectively, the enzyme was fully unfolded in 4 M urea. From an analysis of the unfolding curve in terms of the two-state model, the stability of the folded state could be estimated as 17 kJÆmol)1.

  • Arginine is a versatile additive to prevent protein aggrega-tion. This paper shows that arginine ethylester (ArgEE) prevents heat-induced inactivation and aggregation of hen egg lysozyme more effectively than arginine or guanidine. TheadditionofArgEEdecreased themelting temperatureof lysozyme. This data could be interpreted in terms of ArgEE binding to unfolded lysozyme, possibly through the ethyl-ated carboxyl group, which leads to effective prevention of intermolecular interaction among aggregation-prone mole-cules.

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the relative use of general state subsidies (tax finance) and tuition (user charge finance) in the state financing of higher education. State universities across U.S. states are very different among themselves especially in terms of user charges, public finances, and qualities. In this study, we consider only the State Regime in which the state government decides the user charge, head tax, and expenditure, taking the minimum ability of students as given and the state university simply is treated as a part of government.

  • In this paper, we prove global second derivative estimates for solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the Monge-Amp`re equation when the inhomogee neous term is only assumed to be H¨lder continuous. As a consequence of our o approach, we also establish the existence and uniqueness of globally smooth solutions to the second boundary value problem for the affine maximal surface equation and affine mean curvature equation.

  • This paper is a continuation of Fefferman’s program [7] for studying the geometry and analysis of strictly pseudoconvex domains. The key idea of the program is to consider the Bergman and Szeg¨ kernels of the domains as o analogs of the heat kernel of Riemannian manifolds. In Riemannian (or conformal) geometry, the coefficients of the asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel can be expressed in terms of the curvature of the metric; by integrating the coefficients one obtains index theorems in various settings. ...

  • We study a 1D transport equation with nonlocal velocity and show the formation of singularities in finite time for a generic family of initial data. By adding a diffusion term the finite time singularity is prevented and the solutions exist globally in time. 1. Introduction In this paper we study the nature of the solutions to the following class of equations (1.1)

  • In the symplectic category there is a ‘connect sum’ operation that glues symplectic manifolds by identifying neighborhoods of embedded codimension two submanifolds. This paper establishes a formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic sum Z = X#Y in terms of the relative GW invariants of X and Y . Several applications to enumerative geometry are given. Gromov-Witten invariants are counts of holomorphic maps into symplectic manifolds.

  • To the memory of Rodica Simion The goals of this paper are two-fold. First, we prove, for an arbitrary finite root system Φ, the periodicity conjecture of Al. B. Zamolodchikov [24] that concerns Y -systems, a particular class of functional relations playing an important role in the theory of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Algebraically, Y -systems can be viewed as families of rational functions defined by certain birational recurrences formulated in terms of the root system Φ.
