If you want to improve your understanding of calculus, then this book is for you. It can supplement standard texts at the high-school senior, trade-school, and college undergraduate levels. It can also serve as a self-teaching or home-schooling supplement. Prerequisites include intermediate algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. It will help if you’ve had some precalculus (sometimes called “analysis”) as well. This book contains three major sections. Part 1 involves differentiation in one variable. Part 2 is devoted to integration in one variable.

Alternative estimators have been derived for estimating the variance components according to Iterative Almost Unbiased Estimation (IAUE). As a result two modified IAUEs are introduced. The relative performances of the proposed estimators and other estimators are studied by simulating their bias, Mean Square Error and the probability of getting negative estimates under unbalanced nested-factorial model with two fixed crossed factorial and one nested random factor.

This paper presents an application of PageRank, a random-walk model originally devised for ranking Web search results, to ranking WordNet synsets in terms of how strongly they possess a given semantic property. The semantic properties we use for exemplifying the approach are positivity and negativity, two properties of central importance in sentiment analysis.

We present an algorithm which creates a German CCGbank by translating the syntax graphs in the German Tiger corpus into CCG derivation trees. The resulting corpus contains 46,628 derivations, covering 95% of all complete sentences in Tiger. Lexicons extracted from this corpus contain correct lexical entries for 94% of all known tokens in unseen text.

Identifying whether a multi-word expression (MWE) is compositional or not is important for numerous NLP applications. Sense induction can partition the context of MWEs into semantic uses and therefore aid in deciding compositionality. We study random surfaces which arise as height functions of random perfect matchings (a.k.a. dimer configurations) on a weighted, bipartite, doubly periodic graph G embedded in the plane. We derive explicit formulas for the surface tension and local Gibbs measure probabilities of these models. The answers involve a certain plane algebraic curve, which is the spectral curve of the Kasteleyn operator of the graph. For example, the surface tension is the Legendre dual of the Ronkin function of the spectral curve. The amoeba of the spectral curve represents the phase diagram of the dimer model.

I wrote this text for a one semester course at the sophomore-junior level. Our experience with students taking our junior physics courses is that even if they’ve had the mathematical prerequisites, they usually need more experience using the mathematics to handle it efficiently and to possess usable intuition about the processes involved. If you’ve seen infinite series in a calculus course, you may have no idea that they’re good for anything.
