  • The networked ZnO nanowires (NWs) are synthesized by thermal evaporation at 900 ˚C, using a mixture of ZnO and graphite. The morphology, crystalline structure, and chemical composition of the NWs are evaluated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive spectrum.

  • Heterojunctions of metal oxides and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted great attention because of their unique physical properties and giant potential applications. In this study, we report the fabrication of NO2 gas sensors using heterojunctions made of SnO2 nanowires and SWCNTs. The single crystal SnO2 nanowires were grown on Pt electrodes via thermal evaporation. A thin film of SWCNTs was synthesized directly on top of the SnO2 nanowires to form the SnO2/SWCNTs heterojunctions by arc- discharge method.

  • By doping of Cu2+ ion, the absorption wavelength is shifted towards the lower wavelength being an evidence for an increasing band gap. The emission spectrum of pure ZnS has a green emission band centred at around 520 nm. By doping Cu2+ ion, the peak of the green band in the luminescence spectra were transferred to 516 nm and appeared a strong blue peak at 440 nm. The reasons of these will be discussed in this paper.

  • The last stage is the continuous decomposition of lignin at higher temperature up to 580 oC. For cellulose, the thermal degradation in air atmosphere has decomposition temperature higher than that in the nitrogen atmosphere but the ending temperature is lower. On the other hand, the thermal decomposition of lignin just occurred from 150 to 560 oC. The reaction for acacia wood demonstrated three stages. The water evaporated at lower than 120 oC in the first stage. The second stage is the devolatilization of biomass (214-322 oC) and the third one (322-420 oC) is the combustion of char.

The deposition speed of Ti thin fims was carried out at 0.15 nm/s and 1 nm/s. The results show that after annealing at 450˚C for 8 h, the obtained TiO2 thin films have nanoparticle structure with grain size of 20 nm for the Ti thin film deposited at the rate of 1nm/s, whereas at the a deposition rate of 0.15 nm/s, the TiO2 has a nanorod structure with the rod length of 300 – 400 nm.

  • Silicon nanowires (Si NWs) were fabricated on Si(111) surfaces by both thermal evaporation and sputtering methods. Au nanocrystals were used as the metal catalysts and they were fabricated by electron beam evaporation. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used to characterize the Si NWs. The diameters of the Si NWs were measured to be about few tens of nanometer. The mechanism of the nanowires formation by these methods was also discussed.

  • The results showed that the obtained ZnO NWs have diameters in the range of 300–350 nm with lengths of several tens micrometers. The prepared ZnO NWs are of a single crystal, which have a hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure with c–axis (002) orientation growth perpendicular to the substrate surface. The NW arrays had a good crystal quality with excellent optical properties, indicating a sharp and strong ultraviolet emission at 380 nm, and a weak visible emission at around 516 nm.
