Anther culture is an effective breeding method for improving desirable traits, since it allows fast achievement of genetically homozygous lines. The present studies were carried out to evaluate the response of flue-cured tobacco anthers for high frequency pollen embryo induction in different culture media, and the effects of colchicine treatment on tobacco chromosome doubling. The results showed that different media caused significant changes in pollen embryo induction, in which the most obvious change was found in B medium with induction rates of 23.28%, 26.64%, and 28.

Weather change in high-altitude areas subjects mature tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) to cold stress, which damages tobacco leaf yield and quality. A brupt diurnal temperature differences (the daily temperature dropping more than 20 °C) along with rainfall in tobacco-growing areas at an altitude above 2450 m, caused cold stress to field-grown tobacco.

Tobacco seed oil could be used as an appropriate feedstock for biodiesel production. However, the high linoleic acid content of tobacco seed oil makes it susceptible to oxidation. Altering the fatty acid profile by increasing the content of oleic acid could improve the properties of biodiesel produced from tobacco seed oil.

The present investigation was carried out at ZAHRS, UAHS, Shivamogga during 2016- 2017 Kharif season to study the genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance, in F3 generation of FCV (Flue Cured Virginia) tobacco cross, TB-70 x TB-102. The mean and variance in sixteen quantitative characters in F3 generation of the cross TB-70 x TB-102 indicated wide variability among the families for all the traits viz.

The experiment was carried out at ZAHRS, UAHS, Shivamogga during 2016-2017 Kharif to study the character association and path analysis in respect of cured leaf yield and its contributing traits in F3 generation of FCV (Flue Cured Virginia) tobacco cross TB-70 x TB-102, The component characters viz., green leaf yield, top grade equivalent, stem girth, number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf area per plant, plant height and leaf breadth exhibited significant positive correlation with each other and also with cured leaf yield.

We have previously reported that the seed-specific overexpression of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) Heat Shock Factor A9 (HaHSFA9) enhanced seed longevity in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). In addition, the overexpression of HaHSFA9 in vegetative organs conferred tolerance to drastic levels of dehydration and oxidative stress.

Combining ability analysis was carried out for leaf yield and its components in FCV tobacco. Both General combining ability (GCA) and Specific combining ability (SCA) variances were highly significant for almost all the characters.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of heavy metals (Ni, Fe, Pb, Co, Cd, Hg, Al, Zn and Cu) on pollen germination and pollen tube length in the tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum L.) cv. Karaba¤lar. The results showed that enhanced concentrations of heavy metals, except Fe, decreased the pollen germination rates and the pollen tube lengths.
