Efficacy of biocontrol agents and organic amendments was evaluated for their potential to manage the Fusarium wilt of tomato (Lycopersicon escluentum L.) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL). Yeast, Trichoderma viride, T. harzianum and Pseudomonas spp. were collected from tomato growing areas of Tamil Nadu, India, and tested for antagonistic activity against the pathogen using a dual culture technique in Petri dishes.

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici [FOL], the pathogen inflicting vascular wilt in tomato, pose a serious threat to the nutritional security. In India, due to lack of proper knowledge on the disease aetiology, the management of the disease becomes difficult. The main objective of this study is to select the most virulent FOL isolate among 7 putative Fusarium isolates, including 2 isolates acquired during field survey. The pathogenicity assay revealed the most virulent isolate TOFU-IHBT that exhibited systemic symptom in tomato plants within 5 days of pathogen inoculation.

The folding of a 93-residue protein, the histidine-phospho-carrier protein ofStreptomyces coelicolor,HPr,hasbeen studied using several biophysical techniques, namely fluo-rescence, 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfate binding, circular dichroism, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel filtration chromatography and differential scanning calori-metry. The chemical-denaturation behaviour of HPr, fol-lowed by fluorescence, CD and gel filtration, at pH 7.5 and 25
C, is described as a two-state process, which does not involve the accumulation of thermodynamically stable intermediates.

In order to study the role of peroxisome proliferator-acti-vated receptor ain mouse intestine, its agonist-induced proteins were identified by peptide mass fingerprinting fol-lowed byNorthern blot analysis using their cDNAs. One of the most remarkably induced proteins was identified as 17b-hydroxysterol dehydrogenase type 11. Its very rapid induction by various agonists was most efficient in intestine and then in liver.

The structure of photosystem II (PSII) complex isolated from thylakoid membranes of the red alga Porphyridium cruentum was investigated using electron microscopy fol-lowed by single particle image analysis. The dimeric com-plexes observed contain all major PSII subunits (CP47, CP43, D1 and D2 proteins) as well as the extrinsic proteins (33 kDa, 12 kDa and the cytochromec550 ) of the oxygen-evolvingcomplex (OEC) of PSII, encodedby thepsbO,psbU andpsbVgenes, respectively.
