This paper first briefly introduces principles, construction procedures and quality control techniques of an innovative CDM method that can create head-enlarged column, named as Point Foundation (PF). The method is practically implemented with a specific binder that is environment-friendly and more effective in strength enhancing compared with the common binder as cement.

A variational principle for channel and pipe flows of incompressible viscous fluid is proposed. For low Reynolds numbers this variational principle reduces to the principle of minimum dissipation. For high Reynolds numbers it enables one to calculate the velocity profiles and the corresponding friction factors with reasonably good accuracy.

In our previous paper, we constructed bounds on the effective bulk modulus of isotropic multicomponent composites using minimum energy principles and modified Hashin-Shtrikman polarization trial fields. In this paper, following the variational approach, we construct more sophisticated bounds on the effective shear modulus. Applications to particular models are presented.

In the treatment of bone pain, the second step on the WHO analgesic ladder is commonly unhelpful, with inadequate pain relief or the development of undesirable/intolerable side-effects (Eisenberg, 2005). There is currently no place for interventional treatment on the ladder and the earlier recommendations of a fourth step of interventional management are not applied widely enough. The main principles of pain management, including the use of a biopsychosocial approach, should be applied, rather than simply following the WHO ladder.

Techniques for non-invasive Breslow determination use either mechanical or electromagnetic waves. A wave is the propagation of a perturbation inducing reversible variations of local physical properties. It transports energy but no matter. Ultrasounds and optical waves are used mainly because of their innocuousness. In the next paragraphs, ultrasonography then several optical techniques will be developed. Basic physical principles of each type of wave interaction with skin will be described then accuracy of Breslow index determination by such techniques will be given.

This new text, intended for the senior undergraduate finite element course in mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering departments, gives students a solid, practical understanding of the principles of the finite element method within a variety of engineering applications. Hutton discusses basic theory of the finite element method while avoiding variational calculus, instead focusing upon the engineering mechanics and mathematical background that may be expected of senior engineering students.
