Multiplier onion or Aggregatum onion (Allium cepa var. aggregatum) is one of the important bulbous vegetable cultivated in India. Onion is mainly propagated through bulbs and approximately 1000 kg of bulb is required for planting in one hectare of area. Huge quantities of onion bulbs are wasted for propagation purpose. By switching over from bulb propagation method to seed, there is a saving of seed bulb to a tune of 1000 kg/ha. As Aggregatum onion is being cultivated in 30,000 hectares in Tamil Nadu, a saving of 30,000 tonnes bulbs could be obtained.

The aim of the research was isolation of efficient cellulolytic bacterial strains from soil samples and comparative assessment of their cellulolytic potential on untreated and pre-treated cellulosic wastes namely sugarcane bagasse, groundnut shell, corn cob, and vegetable peel so as to determine a suitable substrate pre-treatment for cellulolytic enzyme production. The substrates were pretreated with 0.5% NaOH (alkali treatment) and 0.

The factors that affect transesterification such as temperature, time and molar ratio have been included. The study reveals that waste beef fat would be a suitable replacement of vegetable oils due to low cost, its role in protecting the environment, and beef tallow esters are close to ASTM D 6751 biodiesel standards. Research work needs to be carried out on heterogeneous catalysts and low-cost lipase catalysts to improve productivity.

This is followed by the nitrogen cycle with much emphasis on de-nitrification, the bacteria responsible and the substrate they feed on. It discovers that, the suitability of different domestic wastes such as (pine bark, vegetable waste, commercial garden refuse, fresh and immature composted garden refuse etc.) are easily accessible and relatively cheap. The study concludes by suggesting the usage of the CGRraw, 25/75 mix substrate and fresh composted commercial garden refuse because they are said to produce better suitability than others and that they denitrify within the stipulated time.

Water which forms the most important ingredient in the process of photosynthesis is desired for its unobstructed growth. It should be supplied to the soil just to satisfy its field capacity above which the water being supplied is a waste. To save water during the growing rainy season and to make use of this saved water during the other seasons at farm level gives scope to development of various water saving technologies.
