Owing to rapid change in the relations of our country to the several Balkan peoples, the tone of a section written earlier may differ from that of another written later. It...

  • The present paper follows in the path set by these authors, but extends their work in significant ways. We made these extensions to solve this problem in a way that can be directly applied in running systems in such application areas as information extraction or conversational interfaces. In particular, we have sought to produce an attachment decision procedure with far broader coverage than in earlier approaches. Most research to date has focussed on a subset of the attachment problem that only covers 25% of the problem instances in our training data, the socalled binary VNP subset.

  • Diagnostic nuclear medicine began more than 50 years ago and has evolved into a major medical specialty. Its practitioners use low activity levels of radioactive materials in a safe way to gain information about health and disease. Small amounts of radioactive materials, known as radiopharmaceuticals, are intro- duced into the body by injection, swallowing, or inhalation. Different radiopharmaceuticals are used to study different parts of the body. These agents emit photons that can be detected externally by special cameras.

  • This paper addresses two issues concerning lexical access in connected speech recognition: 1) the nature of the pre-lexical representation used to initiate lexical lookup 2) the points at which lexical look-up is triggered off this representation. The results of an experiment are reported which was designed to evaluate a number of access strategies proposed in the literature in conjunction with several plausible pre-lexical representations of the speech input.

  • Past work on English coordination has focused on coordination scope disambiguation. In Japanese, detecting whether coordination exists in a sentence is also a problem, and the state-of-the-art alignmentbased method specialized for scope disambiguation does not perform well on Japanese sentences. To take the detection of coordination into account, this paper introduces a ‘bypass’ to the alignment graph used by this method, so as to explicitly represent the non-existence of coordinate structures in a sentence.
