We live in Yorkshire, on a farm in the country. The farmhouse is quite an old a
building. It is about 250 years old. There aren’t many houses near us. There is a
small market in the village about 300 miles away, but we are over twenty miles from
the nearest town. That can be difficult for shopping, but we love it here. It is very
quiet, there is nearly no traffic and the view is wonderful.
Our uncle’s family, however, don’t live in a house or a flat. They live on a
houseboat. The boat looks small, but it is quite big inside. Apart from the bathroom,
it only has one room, so they have to do everything there - eat, cook, sleep, and
watch TV.

Learning a foreign language is, in some ways, like learning how to fly. There are
some differences, but there is a very important similarity. It is this: learning how to
do these things needs a lot of practice. It is never enough to read a book on how to fly
a plane. A book can give you a lot of information about how to fly, but if you only
read that book, then try to fly without practice, you will kill yourself. The same is
true of learning language. For example, can you speak English well without having
