At one time, formal education in most countries was only for the rich. Schools were rare and often connected to a religion. As a result, they did not spend much time on information from a particular subject such as geography or history or on learning an important rule from math, but instead concentrated on teaching about faith of one kind or another. Those children who attended school at this time – nearly all of them boys, since girls’ education was discouraged – mainly had to remember facts instead of really understanding anything about nature or math, for example. As different types of industry took over from agriculture as the main source of employment, there was a need for more educated workers for the new job market. This led to more schools that were open to more people, including boys and even girls from the working class. The subjects taught at these schools were extremely limited, however, their focus being mainly on math, science, and literature, with textbooks only, no visual aids of any sort. Going to school is now a basic right in most places around the world. Schools try to meet the different ways students learn by using various teaching methods. Technology is very important in classrooms now. Resources like interactive whiteboards, digital tablets, and online materials help make learning more engaging and give students access to a lot more information than in the past. Schools also pay more attention to helping students think critically, be creative, alongside learning traditional subjects. According to experts in education, it is likely that school learning will become even more personalized and use more technology over the next 20 or 30 years. Most of these experts believe that artificial intelligence and machine learning could help create learning experiences that fit each student’s own pace and style. Some people even think that virtual reality might make learning more real and interactive. Also, as the world’s problems get more complicated, it is believed that schools will probably focus more on teaching students valuable skills like problem-solving rather than on information about subjects like history, geography, and science, which can be immediately provided by the web.
