Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 16 to 25. The ancient Mayans played a game in which a ball was thrown through a basket with a vertical-facing hoop attached to a wall. This Mayan game is the only known precedent for the game later invented by Dr. James A. Naismith, an instructor at the YMCA's International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. In the winter of 1891, Naismith was approached by the head of the YMCA's physical training staff, who had concluded that the drop in attendance at his clubs was the result of the dearth of competitive sports in winter. Naismith probably knew nothing about the Mayans, and he was less concerned with history than with the fact that the game he was to create had to be played indoors. All games used a ball, so he decided this one must also. Since it was to be played indoors, the players should not be allowed to run with the ball, as they did in football, or kick it, or knock other players down. Naismith subsequently invented an indoor sport using a round ball and two peach baskets, thus giving birth to the " all-American" game of basketball. Naismith settled on a rounded goal, rather than uprights as in football, to keep players from charging at it. He placed the goal above their heads to keep defenses from clustering around it. He found some peach baskets, fastened them to the wall, threw in a soccer ball, and came up with half a dozen simple rules. Because it was simple and easy to learn, basketball caught on quickly. Beginning with seven players per team, which grew to nine, and finally settled at five, the game was being administered by the Amateur Athletic Union. An exhibition game was played at the 1904 Olympics, and after several pioneering seasons played by Yale and Penn, the National Collegiate Athletic Association established its rules officially in 1908. Soon basketball was attracting crowds in high schools and colleges around the country. By the 1930s, professional basketball was under way, and leagues began showcasing the sport's better players. Players sometimes created new maneuvers. Stanford University's Hank Lusetti invented the jump shot, and scores soared into the sixties and seventies. In later years, Wilt Chamberlain showed that the game could be played " above the rim, " ushering in the age of the slam dunk later perfected by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Today, basketball fans love fast-paced, quick-scoring games, but more importantly, they want basketball "stars". Question 16. Which of the following best describes the organisation of the passage? A. 4. VI. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 33 to 42. Carbohydrates, which are sugars, are an essential part of a healthy diet. They provide the main source of energy for the body, and they also function to flavor and sweeten food. Carbohydrates range from simple sugars like glucose to complex sugars such as amylase and amylopectin. Nutritionists estimate that carbohydrates should make up about one-fourth to one-fifth of a person's diet. This translates to about 75-100 grams of carbohydrates per day. A diet that is deficient in carbohydrates can have an adverse effect on a person's health. When the body lacks a sufficient amount of carbohydrates it must then use its protein supplies for energy, a process called gluconeogenesis. This, however, results in a lack of necessary protein, and further health difficulties may occur. A lack of carbohydrates can also lead to ketosis, a build-up of ketones in the body that causes fatigue, lethargy and bad breath. Question 33. What is the main idea of this passage? A.
