These studies have disclosed that the judgments of interviewers differ markedly and bear
little or no relationship to the adequacy of job applicants. Of the many reasons why this should be the case, three
in particular stand out. The first reason is related to an error of judgment known as hallo effect. If a person has
one noticeable good trait, their other characteristics will be judged as better than they really are. Thus, an
individual who dresses smartly and show self-confidence is likely to be judged capable of doing the job well
regardless of his or her real ability.
Interviewers are also prejudiced by an effect called the primacy effect. This error occurs when
interpretation of later information is distorted by earlier connected information. Hence, in an interview situation,
the interviewer spends most of the interview trying to confirm the impression given by the candidate in the first
few moments. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that such an impression is unrelated to the aptitude of the
applicant.
The phenomenon known as the contrast effect also skews the judgment of interviewers. A suitable
candidate may be underestimated because he or she contrasts with a previous one who appears exceptionally
intelligent. Likewise, an average candidate who is preceded by one who gives a weak showing may be judged as
more suitable than he or she really is.
Since interviews as a form of personnel selection have been shown to be inadequate, other selection
procedures have been devised which more accurately predict candidate suitability. Of the various tests devised,
the predictor which appears to do this most successfully is cognitive ability as measured by a variety of verbal
and spatial tests.
Page 1/4- Mã đề 424

Question 10: This passage mainly discusses the _______.
A. effects of interviewing on job applicants B. judgments of interviewers concerning job applicants
C. inadequacy of interviewing job applicants D. technique that interviewers use for judging job applicants
Question 11: The word “hindrance” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _______.
A. interference
B. encouragement
C. assistance
D. procedure
Question 12: The word "they" in paragraph 1 refers to _______.
A. judgments
B. applicants
C. interviewers
D. characteristics
Question 13: According to the passage, the halo effect _______.
A. stands out as the worst judgmental error
B. takes effect only when a candidate is well dressed
C. exemplifies how one good characteristic colors perceptions
D. helps the interviewer to judge real ability
Question 14: The word "confirm" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _____.
A. conclude
B. verify
C. recollect
D. misrepresent
Question 15: According to the passage, the first impression _____.
A. can easily be altered
B. is the one that stays with the interviewer
C. is unrelated to the interviewer’s prejudices D. has been repeatedly demonstrated to the applicant
Question 16: The author mentions all of the following reasons why interviewing is not an accurate way to predict
candidate suitability EXCEPT the ______.
A. halo effect
B. primacy effect
C. contrast effect
D. cognitive effect
Question 17: We can infer that the paragraph following the passage most likely discusses which of the following?
A. To address these urban challenges, governments have
come up with the idea of smart cities in which new technologies are applied to promote sustainable development
and create a high quality of life for citizens. Let's have a look at two of the leading global smart cities and their
innovative solutions:
Copenhagen
Regarded as the greenest capital city in the world, Copenhagen is a front runner in green technology
innovations. The city is aiming to be the first carbon-neutral capital by 2025, and it has reduced carbon emissions
by 50 percent since 1995. Besides, lots of money has been invested in upgrading bike lanes, so 45% of its
residents go to work or school by bike every day. The invention of an intelligent traffic management system also
helps optimize traffic flow and remedy road congestion. In terms of waste treatment, Copenhagen sends less than

Page 2/4- Mã đề 424

2% of its waste to landfills. Half of the waste is recycled and most of the waste is used to generate heat for the
city's district heating network. Its highly efficient district heating system connects 98% of all households, while
in the summer months, the district cooling system relies on cold water from the sea to save 70% of energy
compared to traditional air-conditioning. This is part of its plan to create renewable energy resources.
Singapore
While several nations around the world are experimenting with 'smart city' technologies to handle issues
such as street lighting, traffic light management and waste collection, the city-state of Singapore has a much more
ambitious vision for its whole nation. Its centrepiece is a Smart Nation Platform that brings together data from a
nationwide sensor network. Collected data will be transferred into an open data platform and a "Virtual
Singapore" model will allow city planners to prevent crime, determine traffic density and send out wide-scale
warnings during an emergency. Moreover, 98% of government services are accessible online, and an in-house
Digital Government Services team has launched various public mobile apps for healthcare and transport. With
these efforts, Singapore is on the move to reach its vision to be the world's first Smart Nation.
Question 22: What is the passage about?
A. leading global smart cities
A. a front runner in green technology innovations
B. rapid urbanization and high population density D. new ways of cooling system
Question 23: The phrase “these urban challenges” in paragraph 1 refers to:
A. rapid urbanization of rural areas
B. governments’ demand to innovate the cities
C. development of technology 4.0
D. strain on transportation, infrastructure, energy and other things
Question 24: The word “handle” in paragraph 3 mostly means _____
A. take
B. solve
C. prevent
D. consider
Question 25: All of the following green technology innovations have been applied in Copenhagen EXCEPT____
A. upgrading bicycle lanes
B. collecting data from a national network of sensors
C. generating heat from waste
D. making use of cold water from the sea for district cooling system
Question 26: Which of the following information is NOT GIVEN in the passage?
A.
