  • This paper reviews the durability of concrete containing pozzolans in marine environments, which mainly focuses on resistance to chloride ion penetration and sulfate attack. The results of previous literature showed that the main ions of seawater are almost similar but the salinity varies with location. The mechanism of chemical reaction between seawater and concrete was carefully reviewed and explained.

  • The potential use of locally sourced ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) and commercial sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) in the development of an eco-friendly sulfate-activated binder (SAB) was investigated in this study. The influence of Na2SO4 contents (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5% by mass of GGBFS) as a crucial sulfate activator on mechanical strength and durability performance of the SAB samples was evaluated through the tests of compressive strength, porosity, chloride ion penetration, and ultrasonic pulse velocity.

  • Water based polymer systems are often used for improvement in the properties of plain cement mortar or concrete. Presently, latexes of a single or combinations of polymers like polyvinyl acetate, copolymers of vinyl acetate–ethylene, styrene–butadiene, styrene–acrylic, and acrylic and styrene butadiene rubber emulsions are generally used. One of the limitations of these polymer systems is that they may re-emulsify in humid alkaline conditions. To overcome this problem, an epoxy emulsion based polymer system has been developed.

  • The efficiency of four commercial concrete coatings (a polymer modified cementitious mortar and three elastomeric coatings) against chloride-induced corrosion is discussed by means of steel corrosion longterm monitoring and by chlorides penetration profiles in concrete. The cement-based coating shows the best effect on delay chlorides penetration in concrete by acting as a physical barrier in addition to concrete cover. Despite its lower polymer content, the higher thickness guarantees a longer time-to-corrosion with respect to organic coatings.

  • In recent years, many researches have been developing towards biocompatible improvement and cellular penetrating ability of dendrimers in order to use in diagnosis and treatment therapy for several type of cancer. In this study, to enhance biocompatibility, drug loading efficiency and cellular uptake of the polyamidoamine dendrimer, the dendrimer generation 3.0 (G 3.0) was conjugated with hexanoyl chloride and targeted with acid folic (G3.0-C6-FA).

  • An important improvement in polypyrrole film protection efficiency of iron was obtained by doping the polypyrrole film during the synthesis with a surfactant as the dodecylsulfate. These counter-ions have a very weak mobility in the polypyrrole, which thus becomes cationic permselective. The chloride anions penetration in the films is hence strongly reduced.

  • The Pitting corrosion book covers recent research challenges and various accomplishments in the field of corrosion. The book is a proven record of excellent scientific achievements in the field of pitting corrosion. Pitting corrosion involves local dissolution followed by the formation of cavities on metals surfaces coated with a passive film, when exposed to an aqueous solution containing aggressive anions, such as chloride and sulfate. Pitting is one of the most destructive forms of corrosion, as it causes potential failure of metals and alloys due to perforation/penetration....
