The volume catalogues the impact of clinical trials on the practice of medicine and discusses the developments and practice of medical statistics. Cancer, cardiovascular disease, dermatological, dental, mental, ophthalmic health, gynaecology and respiratory diseases are all discussed in separate chapters, with discussions on outcome measures, competing risks and statistical models given for each therapy area.

This book on investigative electrocardiography is addressed to investigators who are using electrocardiology as a research tool in epidemiological or clinical research or in investigations on possible adverse responses of new pharmacological agents. The primary emphasis of the book is on prognostic implications of ECG abnormalities in the conditions covered, including the prevalence and incidence of ECG abnormalities in contrasting populations. We excluded from our book cardiac disorders with a relatively low population prevalence that otherwise may be of great clinical interest.

The STOP system, which generates personalised smoking-cessation letters, was evaluated by a randomised controlled clinical trial. We believe this is the largest and perhaps most rigorous task effectiveness evaluation ever performed on an NLG system. The detailed results of the clinical trial have been presented elsewhere, in the medical literature.

Clinical trials enable scientific discoveries to advance patient care, and they also inform and guide subsequent research. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) supports the largest U.S. network of clinical trials of any type, of which the largest component is the Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program (informally known as the Cooperative Group Program). It currently comprises 10 Groups that involve more than 3,100 institutions and 14,000 investigators who enroll more than 25,000 patients in clinical trials each year.

Follow-Up Care after Testing Depending on the nature of the genetic disorder, posttest interventions may include (1) cautious surveillance and appropriate health care screening, (2) specific medical interventions, (3) chemoprevention, (4) risk avoidance, and (5) referral to support services. Sources of Evidence: Clinical Trials and Registries The notion of learning from observation of patients is as old as medicine itself. Over the last 50 years, our understanding of how best to turn raw observation into useful evidence has evolved considerably. Case reports, personal anecdotal experience, and small single-center case series are now recognized as having severe limitations to validity and have no role in formulating modern standards of practice. The major tools used to develop reliable evidence consist of the randomized clinical trial and the large observational registry.

Principles of Dose Selection The desired goal of therapy with any drug is to maximize the likelihood of a beneficial effect while minimizing the risk of adverse effects.
