Counting multiplicities

This book presents the basic concepts of probability in a simple, straightforward, easy-to-understand way. It does require, however, a knowledge of arithmetic (fractions, decimals, and percents) and a knowledge of basic algebra (formulas, exponents, order of operations, etc.). If you need a review of these concepts, you can consult another of my books in this series entitled Pre-Algebra Demystified.

Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a marker of platelet activation, which is usually negatively correlated with platelet count (PC). The ratio of MPV to PC (MPV/PC) has an essential role in the diagnosis of multiple malignancies.

Using the second main theorem of value distribution theory and Borel’s lemma, Nevanlinna proved that for two nonconstant meromorphic functions \(f\) and \(g\) on the complex plane C, if they have the same inverse images for five distinct values, then \(f \equiv g\), and that \(g\) is a special type of linear fractional transformation of \(f\) if they have the same inverse images, counted with multiplicities, for four distinct values.

In the article "Uniqueness theorems for meromorphic mappings with few hyperplanes", we prove some uniqueness theorems for meromorphic mappings into \({P^n}(C)\) which share few hyperplanes with truncated counting multiplicities without condition on the intersections of the inverse images of these hyperplanes.

High-throughput chromosome conformation capture assays, such as Hi-C, have shown that the genome is organized into organizational units such as topologically associating domains (TADs), which can impact gene regulatory processes. The sparsity of Hi-C matrices poses a challenge for reliable detection of these units.

The mean platelet volume/platelet count ratio (MPV/PC) ratio based on the preoperative peripheral MPV and PCcan be used to predict the prognosis of multiple malignant tumors. MPV/PC may be used as a novel independent prognostic factor for patients with resectable cervical cancer.

Crossover generated by meiotic recombination is a fundamental event that facilitates meiosis and sexual reproduction. Comparative studies have shown wide variation in recombination rate among species, but the characterization of recombination features between cattle breeds has not yet been performed. Cattle populations in North America count millions, and the dairy industry has genotyped millions of individuals with pedigree information that provide a unique opportunity to study breed-level variations in recombination.

Aging is a multifactorial process that affects multiple tissues and is characterized by changes in homeostasis over time, leading to increased morbidity. Whole blood gene expression signatures have been associated with aging and have been used to gain information on its biological mechanisms, which are still not fully understood.

The challenges lie in being able to reliably and rapidly detect multiple small objects of interest against a cluttered background which usually consists of trees and buildings, and then classify them as the light vehicle or heavy vehicle based on their pixels length. To this end, we present a concept of traffic monitoring system. The proposed approach can disclose and classify vehicles using the uncelebrated video images. This prototype system is capable to use the uncelebrated surveillance cameras for real-time traffic data collection.

Many cell lines currently used in medical research, such as cancer cells or stem cells, grow in confluent sheets or colonies. The biology of individual cells provide valuable information, thus the separation of touching cells in these microscopy images is critical for counting, identification and measurement of individual cells.

Cell counting from cell cultures is required in multiple biological and biomedical research applications. Especially, accurate brightfield-based cell counting methods are needed for cell growth analysis. With deep learning, cells can be detected with high accuracy, but manually annotated training data is required.

This article presents a study of the bacteria bioremediation characters and their heavy metal and antibiotic tolerance from the petroleum contaminated soil located in industrialized areas of Chhattisgarh, India. Soil sediments were characterized by FTIR for the presence of aromatic compounds and further the heterotrophic and fuel degrader counts was estimated. The strains characterized were predominantly from the Bacillus species which showed mixed resistance patterns against antibiotics and heavy metals.

Diseases due to consumption of water contaminated with microbes extract considerable morbidity and mortality. Monitoring of drinking water quality is thus of paramount importance. This study was done to assess water quality of hospital and residential water supply at our Medical Institute. Drinking water samples were collected from taps water coolers and submersible pumps and analyzed by multiple tube culture method to obtain Presumptive coliform count which is an indicator of recent faecal contamination.

Respiratory tract infections are among the most common infections in India. Multiple etiological agents are involved in the causation of these infections. Swine flu H1N1 is one among the influenza viruses which has great potential to cause epidemics as well as pandemics with great mortality and morbidity. All the suspected cases should be identified at the earliest so that interventions can be taken to prevent the spread of infections and thus contain the outbreaks.

In India, fish consumers prefer three types of retail markets viz., local dry fish market, local fresh fish market and supermarket wherein no stringent food safety measures are followed and monitored. Hence, the present study was planned to analyze food safety parameters for different outlets by collecting equal numbers of fish samples from all three markets of Navi Mumbai region. Proximate composition, biochemical and microbiological parameters were evaluated. Antibiogram for the isolated Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from these fishes was studied.

Disseminated cutaneous histoplasmosis in a 30-Year-Old Male HIV-Positive patient: A rare case report
Histoplasmosis is a systemic mycotic infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, a dimorphic fungus. Although histoplasmosis can occur in immunocompetent persons, but immunocompromised individuals, such as people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), are at high risk of developing disseminated disease. In AIDS patients, mortality may approach 50%, due to disseminated histoplasmosis, especially in those with severe manifestations.
