CH bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of seven ent-kaurane diterpenoids extracted from Croton tonkinensis Gagnep. have been investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) method. The calculations were performed at the M05-2X/6-31+G(d) level of theory. Additionally, insight into the effects of different substituents including –NH2, –OH, –NO2, –SH, –CN, –Cl, –CONH2, –CH-(CH3)2, –NHCOCH3, –OCOCH3 and –C2H5 on BDE have also been provided.

The structures of 1, 2 and 3 were determined on the basis of ESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data. Although the flavonoid glucosides found exclusively in the ethyl acetate and n-butanol soluble fractions are reported for antioxidative and antiinflammatory activities their contribution to the medicinal properties of C. tonkinensis is demonstrated to be less than the lipid soluble entkaurene diterpenoid constituents of this plant.

(Euphorbiaceae) oriented by traditional medicine interesting biological activities of the plant were demonstrated in correlation with the ent-kaurane-type diterpenoid constituents. -hydroxykaur-16-en-15-one (1) led to our recent study on the chemical modification of this lead compound. In this paper the transformations of 1 into several derivatives by hydrolysis, acetylation, and oxydation were reported.

Three diterpenoids with ent-kaur-16-ene skeleton, namely, ent-11 -acetoxy-7,14 - dihydroxykaur-16-en-15-one, ent-18-hydroxykaur-16-ene and ent-kaur-16-en-15-oxo-18-oic acid were isolated from the MeOH extract of the dried leaves of Croton tonkinensis Gagnep. (Euphorbiaceae) by successive chromatographic separation on silica gel, ODS gel and HPLC on ODS. Their structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic analyses.

Croton tonkinensis Gagnep. is an indigenous plant using in the folk medicine of Vietnam. For the first time two flavonoid-C-glucosides have been isolated from the aerial part of this plant. By the means of IR, FAB-MS, 1 H- and 13 C-NMR spectra, they were identified as vitexin and isovitexin.

Croton tonkinensis Gagnep., commonly named in Vietnamese as "Kho sam Bac Bo", is a tropical shrub native to the Northern Vietnam. Its dried leaves (Folium Tonkinensis) have been used in Vietnamese traditional medicine to treat boils, abscesses, impetigo, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, dysentery, gastric and duodenal ulcers [1, 2]. The plant is of our interest since its varied biological activities demonstrated in our various in vitro bioassays including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiplasmodial, antibacterial and antifungal.

In continuation of our reports on the chemical constituents of Croton tonkinensis Gagnep. (Euphorbiaceae) [1] this paper deals with the isolation and structure elucidation of two long chain alkyl alcohols. Two compounds 1 and 2 were isolated by repeated silica gel column chromatography of the n-hexane soluble fraction obtained from the methanol extract of the dried leaves of C. tonkinensis by liquid - liquid fractionation [2]. The long aliphatic chains of both compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by the 1 H and 13 C NMR spectra: H 0.88 (3H, t, J = 6.6 Hz), C 14.
