Design of experiments

Fashion design education does not have a very long history in Sri Lanka. But the institutes have completed considerable number of years to review their curriculum approaches to revise for future trends and demands. At present, so far locally qualified fashion designers are applying fashion design in many unique ways according to each individual’s need. This research will identify their experience and practices. In doing so, the research will assist to understand the current position of the fashion designer within Sri Lanka’s fashion industry system to address the key research questions.

This thesis investigates the SPH capability available in the commercial Finite Element (FE) code LS-DYNA®, for water impact problems. Experiments have been conducted on rigid wedges impacting water, which were then simulated with the SPH method. Although certain limitations were experienced with the experimental results, a positive correlation was observed with the numerical technique, thus establishing SPH as a promising method for crashworthiness design.

This research investigates the interactive effects of usability, the designer perspective and user expectations on the user experience (UX) of e-commerce websites. It incorporates the theoretical underpinnings of Norman’s (1988) seminal research specifically, Mental Models and Nielsen’s User Categories (1993) to explore the different mental models, domain and technology expertise of two distinct groups – users and designers – in the interaction with a selected system image, that of the e-commerce website.

This research examines how parametric loudspeakers may be considered unique acousmatic musical instruments; how the parametric acoustic array (PAA) can potentially make new forms of music and listening experiences; and how PAA-design problems can be overcome. Interdisciplinary in nature, the study uses grounded theory and experimental music practice within a design research methodology. Theory emerges from data, in concert with analysis and framing that draws on areas such as electroacoustic music, spatial composition, acoustics, PAA science/theory, modulation theory, and medium theory.

This dissertation presents a creative practice-based experiment in civil celebrancy with the focus on contemporary celebrancy. The dissertation constructs and reflects upon a Ceremony of Restoration to give meaning, healing, and mending for people’s lives in the wake of traumatic, chaotic, and unresolved events. Study on hydraulic stability and structural integrity of RAKUNA-IV armour units when randomly placed on the seaward slope of a rubble mound breakwater by means of experiments on physical models in a wave flume and simulations in mathematical models. The results of the research were later applied to a specific breakwater. Recommendations and solutions were thereby put forward for the design, production and construction of RAKUNA-IV armour units when applied to rubble mound breakwaters in reality.

Source and sink activity measured after anthesis in six poplar rice cultivars. The experiment was laid in randomized block design with six cultivars MTU-1001, MTU1010, MTU-7029, BPT-2231, BPT-3291 and BPT-5204 replicated four times. After anthesis, top three leaves separately, top three internodes collectively, panicle axis and grain of main culm were sampled at seven day interval and analysed for biochemical parameters that serve remobilization of nutrients.
