This thesis deals with the finite element simulation of spot welded joint in crash analysis. Spot welding is a very common joining process in the automotive industry. It is cost effective and it provides a very fast production rate of automotive body components. Despite this advantage, spot welds are very susceptible to various types of loading conditions. Therefore they are prone to failure, if not designed properly, during their service life time. Therefore it is very important to understand the behaviour of spot welds and their failure characteristics.

The study examines how Small-Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) demonstrate a range of innovation capabilities when they collaborate with a regional university research centre. This collaboration is shown to be important to create and exchange new knowledge to advance the firms innovation performance. The study demonstrates the ability of firms to acquire and exploit this knowledge, which is a business competency described as absorptive capacity (AC). AC relies on several antecedents or factors to engage with a collective learning process.

The objective of the present research is to explore strategies for trade union revitalisation in Vietnam. The attempts by trade unions in developed countries to respond to the issues they face, such as the decline in union density, have attracted a significant amount of academic research attention since the 1970s (Fiorito 2004; Gahan & Bell 1999). These attempts have been labelled either as union revitalisation or union renewal (Lévesque & Murray 2006).

This research is based on the hypothesis that applying building industry’s best practice initiatives can deliver sustainability within the built environment. This hypothesis assumes links between the applied practices, the outcome achieved and sustainability. This research tests this hypothesis with a single ‘critical’ case project; the recently constructed Lithgow Government Office Building (GOB) Development, and against a theoretical framework that defines sustainability.
