Theoretical methods for understanding advanced magnetic materials: The case of frustrated thin films
In this review, we show advanced theoretical methods and solved examples that help understand microscopic mechanisms leading to experimental observations in magnetic thin films. Attention is paid to the case of magnetically frustrated systems in which two or more magnetic interactions are present and competing.

This study was experimental in nature and the research was based on a quantitative approach tailored to minimize threats to validity through the use of a control group. Additionally, it involved elements of related qualitative research to interpret findings. An empirically-based, working hypothesis was presented to the effect that, a greater potential of project success can be realized by introducing information on emotional development to enhance behavioral competencies of all project team members.

The study was aimed to investigate the effects of awareness-oriented tasks with explicit pragmatic instruction on EFL (English Foreign Language) students’ competence to make requests at a university in Ho Chi Minh City. The idea was inspired by the realization that EFL students at the researcher’s university seemed incompetent to make requests in the classroom context and there had been few quasi-experimental studies in this trend of research.

Experimental analysis of the metastatic cascade requires suitable model systems which allow tracing of disseminated tumor cells and the identification of factors leading to metastatic outgrowth in distant organs. Such models, especially models using immune-competent mice, are rather scarce.

Papain, an experimental model protease, was used to decipher the protective mechanism(s) of the cysteine peptidase-based schistosomiasis vaccine. To examine the role of T lymphocytes, athymic nude (nu/nu) and immunocompetent haired (nu/+) mice were subcutaneously (sc) injected with 50 mg active papain two days before percutaneous exposure to 100 cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni. Highly significant (P < 0.005) reductions in worm burden required competent T lymphocytes, while significant increases (P < 0.

As a first step, this work presents the principles of Competency based Approach (to be distinguished from Content-based Instruction) in teaching as well as its criteria. Next, we study some divergences between two viewpoints of Vietnamese and French authors of school textbooks. A more detailed investigation of the application of these criteria in writing experimental science (or «natural science» in Vietnam) textbooks in France will be given in the second part of this publication.

In addition, the fact that there have been few studies investigating the efficacy of conversational implicature to enhance Japanese high school students’ communicative competence was another cause for me to start this research. Though some experimental studies have been done (see Bouton,1992; Broersma, 1994; Kubota, 1995; and Taguchi, 2007), the subjects of their research were university students and immigrants. Few people seem to have examined students’ development of communicative ability in Japanese high school.

In this paper we address the problem of choosing the best solution(s) from a set of interpretations of the same object (in our case a segment of text). A notion of preference is stated, based on pairwise comparisons of complete interpretations in order to obtain a partial order among the competing interpretations. An experimental implementation is described, which uses Prolog-like preference statements.

Techniques for automatically training modules of a natural language generator have recently been proposed, but a fundamental concern is whether the quality of utterances produced with trainable components can compete with hand-crafted template-based or rulebased approaches. In this paper We experimentally evaluate a trainable sentence planner for a spoken dialogue system by eliciting subjective human judgments.

A within-subjects analysis was used to reduce any variability that may have been attributed to differences between subjects: thus, each subject’s performance on one layout was compared with his or her own performance on an alternative layout. The practice diagrams and the randomisation of the order of presentation of the experimental diagrams for each subject helped counter the learning effect (whereby subjects’ performance on the task may improve over time, as they become more competent in the task).
