Japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Seed-borne rice endophytes are capable of disseminating into host plant tissues as well as to their rhizosphere. Here, we investigated the occurrence of siderophore-producing bacteria (SPB) in the seed endospheres of two distinct rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, TK8 (ssp. japonica) and TCN1 (ssp. indica), and their dissemination into the rhizospheres through culture-dependent methods.

Hill rices (Oryza sativa L.) are direct seeded rices grown on hill slopes of different gradients. These landraces have evolved under rainfed and harsh environmental conditions and may possess genes governing adaptation traits such as tolerance to cold and moisture stress.

Regarding the content of total polyphenols, the maximum average value obtained was 477 g Eq g-1 for rice from both countries and the best results for antioxidant activity, using the Photoquem® method with methanolic extract, was 3.43 µM Eq Trolox g-1 for the Italian rice samples. These results indicate that the technological processes influence the nutritional and functional quality of rice grain from these countries.

Lanthanum (La) is a rare earth element that can infuence plant growth and development. However, the efect of La on growth, yield formation and 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP, a key compound responsible for the aroma of rice) biosynthesis in aromatic rice (Oryza sativa L. subsp. japonica Kato) has not been reported.

Rice recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of Japonica x Indica cross were grown in irrigated conditions for identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for yield associated traits. One hundred twenty one RIL lines were evaluated in the field environment. A total of one hundred twenty two SSR markers were used for polymorphism out of forty markers that showed parental polymorphism. Forty SSR markers were used to construct the genetic linkage map. In total, nine QTLs were identified for yield attributing traits.

Improvement of indica rice lines is a challenging task through application of anther culture as they are recalcitrant to culture distinctive to japonica rices. Current investigation aimed to verify the effect of cold pretreatment and phytohormones on the anther culture response of 6 crosses. Cold pretreatment for 7-10 days at 100C was found to have profound effect on callus induction frequency irrespective of the media employed and the prolonged treatment over the optimum showed to be inhibitory...

An F2 population derived from a cross between a high salt-tolerance indica variety, TCCP266, and a susceptible elite temperate-japonica Egyptian variety, Sakha102, were produced. We performed QTL mapping for physiological traits related to rice salttolerance. Single plant analysis of each of the polymorphic marker was carried out using randomly selected 288 F2 individuals. 50 polymorphic markers covered four chromosomes of rice (1, 3, 4 and 9). A total of 24 QTL were detected (LOD score > 2.0), which were distributed on the four chromosomes.

Grain yield in rice is considered as a complex trait, determined by the ultimate expression of its individual component traits. Establishing an association between yield and its component traits plays a vital role in stabilizing the trait ‘overall yield’. Correlation and path analysis were examined in 46 rice genotypes including tropical japonica accessions, indica land races and elite indica cultivars as New plant type (NPT) core set along with checks during kharif 2017.

Effect of growth regulators on frequency of callus induction and shoot regeneration from anthers of two japonica rice varieties viz., Azucena and Moroberekan were studied. Anthers from panicles in which the distance between flag leaf and subtending leaf was 12- 13 cm in Azucena and 14-15 cm in Moroberekan were selected for culture.

The biotechnological intervention to enhance crop productivity via genetic transformation mainly depends upon an efficient regeneration protocol. Japonica, Indica and Basmati varieties of rice vary highly in their regeneration capabilities. Establishment of a highly efficient regeneration system for mature embryos in rice will enable transformation of foreign genes in rice.

An experiment was carried out to study the divergence among twenty four rice genotypes (14 indica and 10 japonica lines) for 15 agro-morphological traits using D2 statistics and at molecular level using 114SSR markers. The cluster analysis using Mahalonobis’ D2 statistics classified the genotypes into five clusters. The cluster IV was the largest with seven indica and three tropical japonica types. The second largest cluster (V) accommodated four tropical japonica and two indica genotypes. The intra cluster distance ranged from 1.077 to 8.
