In India, around 93 tobacco varieties were released and three cultivars identified for commercial cultivation in 10 types of tobacco grown under various agro climatic regions. In order to make this information available to researchers, farmers and students, an online expert system on tobacco varieties was developed using Agridaksh tool designed for creation of knowledge base of all crops at a single platform for global accessing. The information on tobacco varieties provided by the domain experts of tobacco crop was used in constructing the knowledge model.

Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy in India as it provides food and livelihood security. The industrialization of agriculture has favored the use of plenty of agrochemicals including fertilizers, pesticides, micro nutrients, and plant growth regulators in the agricultural fields. Pesticides are an integral part of modern agriculture. The use of pesticides in agriculture is obvious for the prevention of crop-damaging pests, fungus, unwanted plants (weeds) and a number of crop-eating animals like rodents etc.

Knowledge of genetic diversity could be beneficial by contributing important information in the selection of breeding material. The objective of this study was to explore the genetic diversity and relationship in the Turkish tobacco germplasm with the iPBSretrotransposons marker that emerged as a universal method.

The media strongly influence people’s conceptions and perceptions of the so- cial environment. While providing entertainment, they also impart information, cul- tural knowledge and values that in turn influence how people come to view themselves, certain social groups, gender roles, etc. Thus, the media not only aid in socialization, but by providing symbolic resources, they also exercise a form of pedagogy.

The colonization of Virginia was a mammoth undertaking even though launched by a daring and courageous people in an expanding age. The meager knowledge already accumulated was at hand to draw on and England was not without preparation to push for "its place in the sun." There was a growing navy, there was trained leadership, there was capital, there was organization and there were men ready to make the gamble for themselves and to the glory of God and for their country.

In this study, we demonstrate that the folding and assembly of IgG in transgenic tobacco plants is orchestrated by BiP (binding protein), an endoplasmic reticulum resident chap-erone. Expression of BiP and calreticulin was examined in transgenic tobacco plants that express immunoglobulin chains, either singly or in combination to form IgG anti-body. BiP mRNA expression was lowest in wild-type nontransformed plants and those that expressed immuno-globulin light chain alone.

We have compared the site-by-siteN-glycosylation status of human lactoferrin (Lf) produced in maize, a monocotyle-don, and in tobacco, usedas amodel dicotyledon.Maizeand tobacco plants were stably transformed and recombinant Lf was purified from both seeds and leaves. N-glycopeptides were generated by trypsin digestion of recombinant Lf and purified by reverse-phase HPLC. The N-glycosylation pat-tern of each site was determined by mass spectrometry. Our results indicated that the N-glycosylation patterns of recombinant Lf produced in maize and tobacco share common structural features....

Nicotine catabolism, linked inArthrobacter nicotinovorans to the presence of the megaplasmid pAO1, leads to the for-mation ofc-N-methylaminobutyrate from the pyrrolidine ring of the alkaloid. Until now the metabolic fate of c-N-methylaminobutyrate has beenunknown. pAO1 carries a cluster of ORFs with similarity to sarcosine and dimeth-ylglycine dehydrogenases and oxidases, to the bifunctional enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase/cyclo-hydrolase and to formyltetrahydrofolate deformylase.

The cloning of two novel genes that encode cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX) in barley is described in this work. Transformation of both genes intoArabidopsisand tobacco showed that at least one of the genes codes for a functional enzyme, as its expression caused a cytokinin-deficient phenotype in the heterologous host plants. Addi-tional cloning of two gene fragments, and anin silicosearch in the public expressed sequence tag clone databases, revealed the presence of at least 13 more members of the CKXgene family in barley and wheat. ...

We reportedpreviously a direct correlationbetween reduced soybean agglutinin binding to 63- and 68-kDa midgut gly-coproteins and resistance to Cry1Ac toxin from Bacillus thuringiensisin the tobacco budworm (Heliothis virescens). In the present work we describe the identification of the 68-kDaglycoproteinas amembrane-bound formof alkaline phosphatase we term HvALP. Lectin blot analysis of HvALP revealed the existence of N-linked oligosaccharides containing terminal N-acetylgalactosamine required for [ 125 I]Cry1Ac binding in ligand blots. ...

A novel elicitor that induces chitinases in tobacco BY-2 cells was isolated from Alternaria alternata102. Six other fungi, includingA. alternataIFO 6587, could not induce, or weakly induce chitinase activity. The purified elicitor was soluble in 75% methanol and showed the chitinase-inducing activity when applied at concentrations of as low as 25 ngÆmL )1 .

Intact mitochondria isolated from Nicotiana tabacumcv. Bright Yellow 2 (TBY-2) cells can take up riboflavin via carrier-mediated systems that oper-ate at different concentration ranges and have different uptake efficiencies. Once inside mitochondria, riboflavin is converted into catalytically active cofactors, FMN and FAD, due to the existence of a mitochondrial ribofla-vin kinase (EC 2.7.1.26) and an FAD synthetase (EC 2.7.7.2).

When comparing CBE to some of the more traditional models of education (Fig. 2), three fundamentally different characteristics emerge. First, CBE explicitly maps the specific health needs of the populations to a set of competencies for the workforce to be trained. In other words, it guides decisions about what graduates of the educational programs must be able to do, in order to address the key health issues of the community.

Health care personnel have a major role in providing awareness, promoting early detection, prompt referral to a cancer treatment facility and in providing pain relief and palliative care. The knowledge and skills in the above areas have to be enhanced and these manuals have been developed in response to this need. This set of manuals, which consists of a facilitators’ manual and separate manuals for health professionals, cytology, tobacco cessation and palliative care, is an attempt at providing the minimum required capacity.
