In 2016, Uganda added Hydroxyurea (HU) to the list of essential drugs to treat sickle cell disease SCD. However, Hydroxyurea utilization has been low for several countries in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined patient-related barriers to hydroxyurea use among adolescent and adult patients with sickle cell disease in Mulago and Kiruddu hospitals, in Uganda.

Hemoglobin (Hb) Bart’s hydrops fetalis is the most severe form of α-thalassemia and is usually inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. We report a case of Hb Bart’s hydrops fetalis due to uniparental disomy of chromosome 16. Antenatal screening showed a low maternal mean corpuscular volume (MCV), while paternal MCV was normal.

Anemia refers to low hemoglobin (Hb) level and is a risk factor of cancer patient survival. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recently suggested that post-diagnosis Hb change, regardless of baseline Hb level, indicates the potential presence of anemia.

Iron has an important role in various metabolic processes and as a central structure of hemoglobin (Hb) for the process of transporting oxygen. Malnutrition from the beginning of pregnancy until the end of pregnancy will cause problems with labor, premature birth, low birth weight in infants to maternal death. The importance of examining serum Ferritin levels as early detection of iron deficiency anemia is especially carried out before pregnancy or early pregnancy (trimester I), given the high incidence of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women and its impacts.

Anaplasma is one of the most rickettsiale diseases in ruminants. Five species including Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma centrale, Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma phagocytophilium and Anaplasma ovis are recognized in ruminant animals. Anaplasma causes major economic losses to the livestock owner. Anaplasma is mainly transmitted by mechanical way such as by biting flies, lice and biological by different tick species and fomites in livestock.

Two splenic tumor cases of dogs were presented with distended abdomen. Both the dogs showed anorexia, lethargy and not responding to medical treatment. Blood examination showed low hemoglobin and platelet counts. The dogs were surgically operated for removal of very big spleen under Propofol and isoflurane anaesthesia. Haemoabdomen was observed during surgery. Post operatively they were treated with antibiotics and Tab. Prednisolone. Both the dogs recovered uneventfully and are still alive. Histopathological examination of masses reveled splenic haemangiosarcoma.

In this chapter you will learn: Structure of myoglobin and hemoglobin similar; understand oxygen binding curves (where high and low affinity binding occurs); understand positive cooperatively in relationship to oxygen binding to hemoglobin, be able to describe this in relationship to protein conformation and the sigmoidal oxygen binding curve; be able to describe T and R conformations of Hb; understand how oxygen binding changes Hb conformation; define allosteric interaction;...

Bovineb-lactoglobulin was hydrolyzed with trypsin or chymotrypsin in the course of heat treatment at 55, 60 and 65°C at neutral pH. At these temperaturesb-lactoglobulin undergoes signi®cant but reversible structural changes. In the conditions used in the present study,b-lactoglobulinwas virtually insensitive to proteolysis by either enzyme at room temperature, but underwent extensive proteolysis when either proteasewas present during the heat treatment.

A new exocellular laccase was purified from the basidio-mycete C30. LAC2 is an acidic protein (pI¼3.2) prefer-entiallyproducedupona combined inductionby copper and p-hydroxybenzoate.The spectroscopic signature (UV/visible and EPR) of this isoform is typical of multicopper oxidases, but its enzymatic and physico-chemical properties proved to be markedly different from those of LAC1, the constitutive laccase previously purified from the same organism.

In addition to the major carbohydrate moieties of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor, we report that Plasmodiumfalciparummerozoite surface protein1 (MSP-1) bearsO-GlcNAc modifications predominantly in b-ano-meric configuration, in both the C- andN-terminal portions of the protein. Subcellular fractionation of parasitized erythrocytes in the late trophozoite/schizont stage reveals that GPI-anchored C-terminal fragments of MSP-1 are recovered in Triton X-100 resistant, low-density membrane fractions....

Stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1)⁄CXCL12, the ligand for CXCR4, induces signal transduction. We previously showed that CXCL12 binds to high- and low-affinity sites expressed by primary cells and cell lines, and forms complexes with CXCR4 as expected and also with a proteoglycan, syndecan-4, but does not form complexes with syndecan-1, syndecan-2, CD44 or beta-glycan. We also demonstrated the occurrence of a CXCL12-independent heteromeric complex between CXCR4 and syndecan-4.

Transglutaminases form a large family of intracellular and extracellular enzymes that catalyse the Ca 2+ -dependent post-translational modification of proteins. Despite significant advances in our understanding of the biolo-gical role of most mammalian transglutaminase isoforms, recent findings suggest new scenarios, most notably for the ubiquitous tissue transglutami-nase.

Using thein situ liver model system, we have recently shown that, after cholera toxin binding to hepatic cells, cholera toxin accumulates in a low-density endosomal compartment, and then undergoes endosomal proteoly-sis by the aspartic acid protease cathepsin-D [Merlen C, Fayol-Messaoudi D, Fabrega S, El Hage T, Servin A, Authier F (2005)FEBS J272, 4385– 4397]. Here, we have used a subcellular fractionation approach to address the in vivo compartmentalization and cytotoxic action of cholera toxin in rat liver parenchyma....

The insect low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (LDLR) homolog, lipo-phorin receptor (LpR), mediates endocytic uptake of the single insect lipo-protein, high-density lipophorin (HDLp), which is structurally related to LDL. However, in contrast to the fate of LDL, which is endocytosed by LDLR, we previously demonstrated that after endocytosis, HDLp is sorted to the endocytic recycling compartment and recycled for resecretion in a transferrin-like manner.

Onconase is an extremely stable member of the RNase A superfamily. The increase in the thermodynamic stability by 20 kJÆmol )1 in comparison to RNase A was expected to result in altered folding behavior. Despite the lack of cis-Pro residues in native Onconase, refolding at low concentrations of guanidine hydrochloride was complex and showed three kinetic phases (fast, medium, and slow), with rate constants differing by a factor of about 10 each.

Low-affinity hemoglobins should be considered in patients with cyanosis or a low hematocrit with no other reason apparent after thorough evaluation. The P 50 test confirms the diagnosis. Counseling and reassurance are the interventions of choice. Methemoglobin should be suspected in patients with hypoxic symptoms who appear cyanotic but have a Pa O2 sufficiently high that hemoglobin should be fully saturated with oxygen.
