The molecular chaperone GroEL of Escherichia coli represents one such highly conserved family of stress proteins. The Sp family is a family of transcription factors that bind to cis-elements in the promoter regions of various genes. Regulation of transcription by Sp proteins is based on interactions between a GC-rich binding site (GGGCGG) in DNA and C-terminal zinc finger motifs in the proteins. Penaeidins are a family of antimicrobial peptides constitutively produced and stored in the haemocytes of penaeid shrimp. In response to microbial stimulation, they are released into the blood circulation and they further attach to shrimp cuticle surfaces through a chitin-binding property. The centromere–kinetochore complex is a highly specialized chromatin domain that both mediates and monitors chromosome–spindle interactions responsible for accurate partitioning of sister chromatids to daughter cells. Centromeres are distinguished from adjacent chromatin by specific patterns of histone modification and the presence of a centromere-specific histone H3 variant (e.g. CENP-A). A systematic analysis performed in an autochthon southern Italy breed identified a new rare allele (M), which was characterized at both the protein and genomic level.
