Educators are interested in essay evaluation systems that include feedback about writing features that can facilitate the essay revision process. For instance, if the thesis statement of a student’s essay could be automatically identified, the student could then use this information to reflect on the thesis statement with regard to its quality, and its relationship to other discourse elements in the essay. Using a relatively small corpus of manually annotated data, we use Bayesian classification to identify thesis statements.

This book is a slightly revised and updated version of my doctoral thesis, which I defended in June 2007. As so many Ph.D. candidates before me have noted, writing a doctoral thesis is a lonely enterprise. This has been particularly true for a person preparing a thesis on space law in Finland, which clearly does not rank among the major spacefaring countries and has little history in space law research. The solitary hours I have spent with this effort are countless. Nevertheless, numerous other persons and institutions have contributed to the process in one way or another.

In 1995 I wrote a personal statement about my motivation to teach and write about thesis writing. The urge to write this book originated in my own experiences as a student in Scotland, Germany and the USA: As a graduate of a Scottish university I made a deliberate choice to enter a PhD programme in what is often disparagingly referred to as ‘the American system’, as if there were only one system in the USA.

It is also about the ongoing re-structuring of participation in service design within the development of eGovernment. The transformation and modernisation of public services are proclaimed to bring about a change in services based on a ‘citizen-centred approach.
