This history of antimicrobials is marked with impressive discoveries, the majority of which have their origin in natural products. However in this work, the antimicrobial activity of β- nitrostyrenes and related compounds of synthetic origin is reviewed and investigated with a particular focus on the influence of fluorine functionality. Various fluorinated β-methyl-β-nitrostyrene compounds were prepared, their minimum inhibition concentration in cultures of Gram positive, Gram negative and a fungus and their lipophilicity was determined.

3D animation software is extensively used to create graphics for special effects sequences in live-action films, in animated feature film production and for the generation of computer games and virtual reality content. It is a commonly held view within the computer graphics community that 3D animation software is ―just another tool‖ for self-expression. Haem (protohaem IX) analogues are toxic compounds and have been con-sidered for use as antibacterial agents, but the primary mechanism behind their toxicity has not been demonstrated. Using the haem protein catalase in the Gram-positive bacterium Enterococcus faecalisas an experimental system, we show that a variety of haem analogues can be taken up by bac-terial cells and incorporated into haem-dependent enzymes.
