Suburbs in Melbourne present to us a unique context with which a new approach towards urban form can be devised using the existing conditions and opportunities found with infrastructural developments. This thesis contains the investigations on the various 'pathologies' of the urban fabric specifically on the potential use of 'Spaces Left-Over After Planning' as by-product to infrastructural development in relation to the reinvigoration of Melbourne suburbs under the influence of current and future metropolitan growth pressures.

Deproteinated cheese whey was used for biomass production of probiotic strain Lactobacillus helveticus MTCC 5463 in a biofermenter. Optimization of growth parameters such as temperature, pH and time of incubation as well as nutrient supplementation of cheese whey was carried out using response surface methodology (RSM). In fruit production, the effects of flowering and fruiting, which modify source-sink relationships, cannot be overlooked and is even more true in tropical fruit production, where the flowering and fruiting phases exceed six months at the individual tree scale. More specifically, little is known about the effects of source/sink balance, and the associated changes in carbon export rate from leaves and leaf carbohydrate concentration, like the ones resulting from the presence of developing fruits, on leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity within the crown of field-growing trees.

This paper focuses on an autotrophic cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris, in low nitrogen-content media, using indoor photobioreactors. Nutritional factors, which controlled the Chlorella growth and the chemical composition of cells (i.e., proteins, carbohydrates, lipids), were studied. The moderate feeding of both N and P and/or their starvation in the photobioreactor were investigated in order to induce a high accumulation of lipids into Chorella cells.
